 Henrico County's Idiotic Sale
This is really freakin' sad. A sale of iBooks turned into a frenzy where people could have gotten seriously hurt. Granted, it was for $50 iBooks, and I would have done a lot to get a $50 iBook as well, but the people who ran this sale should have charges pressed against them for the sheer idiocy of it all!

Henrico County Schools were dumb enough to ditch the Apple platform for Wintel, but to sell latops worth $500 or more for only $50!? What did they think would happen? That everyone would stand nicely in line saying, "Oh it's no problem at all, you go first! No really, I insist"?

Lord, the director of general services for Henrico County even had the gall to say "It's rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for the purchase of a laptop computer -- and laptop computers that probably have less-than- desirable attributes". Less than desireable? Why would you say that? Because some slick salesman told you that Wintels were somehow better than Macs? Because you didn't want to be wrong in your decision to jump platforms? All he had to do was check on eBay for the going rate of a similar laptop - it's not really that hard to do.

Great system for passing out these $50 iBooks as well. Just open the floodgates and let everybody friggin' book it on in. Why not hand out tickets to people in line, or better yet, oh I don't know, HAVE THE BLOODY SALE ONLINE!?????? I'm so ruddy mad I've just become British!!!

In any case, I should have probably learned by now not to write while under the influence, but it does make for some passionate writing. Good writing, well that's something I don't know much about. But one thing I do know is that school is starting up again real soon. I don't think it'll be very long before the folks at Henrico County Schools start to realize what a mistake they made in jumping ship from OS X and those beautiful iBooks. We may not get a public admission that they made a mistake, but all we need to do is look at next year's budget request and see the support and training staff triple or quadruple.

Good on ya, Henrico County.

Actually, the "less-than- desirable attributes" he was referring to would have been the extreme wear-and-tear inflicted upon the iBooks by 4 years of high school students who didn't really care much about keeping them in good shape.

Additionally, he was also probably referring to the fact that the iBooks are 4 years old and are far too slow for normal use by current standards.

Nich! Mipod, you are dumb.

rlhamon 8/17/05, 12:04 AM EDT
I thought the guy who brought the folding chair to beat people who cut in front of him was the shinning moment.

Jonahan 8/17/05, 7:15 AM EDT
mipod ... sure, they were 4 years old and had lots of wear and tear. Still, $50 bucks? Obviously, any 4-year-old laptop you bought on eBay would have those "less than desireable attributes" and that would go without saying. No, I think he meant something else by that.

panth 8/17/05, 8:34 AM EDT
Yah, an online auction would have raised a lot more money, even being sold 'as is' in heavily used condition, and there wouldn't have been 17 injuries with four hospitalizations.

I too took his comment as a slur on Apple and my favorite was the lady who whipped it(?) out and urinated on herself rather than lose her place in line. Now there's a lady who knows the real value of an iBook!!!

panth 8/17/05, 8:40 AM EDT
err, sorry for double-dipping..but did anyone else notice the security guard's expression in the first picture? and more importantly, did anyone else hear Danny Glover saying 'I'm getting too old for this sh*t!' when they saw it?

Jonahan 8/17/05, 9:52 AM EDT
lol

Another quote from the article that epitomizes justice:

"I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, 'Bam,"' the 20-year-old said nonchalantly, his eyes glued to the screen of his new iBook, as he tapped away on the keyboard at a testing station.

"They were getting in front of me and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just," he said.

Jonahan, you forgot about the woman who wet herself instead of giving up her place in line. 'Course, I would've went on the people in front of me.

Mactards 8/17/05, 4:16 PM EDT
They must have been dumbass Maczealots fighting for those obsolete Apple crap laptops.

Jonahan 8/17/05, 9:00 PM EDT
DJLC, not mentioning something does not mean I forgot about it. Besides, panth mentioned it just a few posts up.

And whoa! What have we here but a honest to goodness Troll! Go 'way. Here, have some chill pills and then take a big swig of Get A Clue. ;-)

I don't think people are looking exactly right at the 'wear and tear'. These are not Notebooks that you or I took care of the last 4 years. Also, keep in mind that all of the notebooks in 'good working order' were sold internally before the general sale. These books would have taken a fair amount of time and money just to get operable, I would bet. Think about it. You just gave something that is pretty fragile (in comparison all electronic devices are pretty fragile) to someone 14-18 years old who didn't put out one dime for the said device. I am surprised that any of them lasted 4 years.

These notebooks were in really bad shape. If you were able to buy a few of them, you 'might' have been able to piece together something that works. Either way, you are going to spend time and money on parts.

If you want an idea of what kind of stuff they were selling, look here

I think I have better machines in my junk machine pile.

This was insanity over nothing. A shame really.

rlhamon 8/18/05, 7:54 AM EDT
I don't think that it was worth nothing .... a laptop that can do anything that someone with limited computer skills (internet, email, pogo games) 50 bucks is a hell of a deal. If doesn't look great big deal remember 50 bucks.
Remember that most of the people that were trying to get a notebook were people who cannot shell out 999 for a laptop so for them this was the only way they could get one.

macgeek 8/18/05, 9:55 AM EDT
The laptops were all working, they let them test them before they left. Most of the damage was cosmetic. A 500 MHz ibook is quite usable. My iBook is only 700MHz and I run Photoshop CS daily. There is no way in hell I would have missed that sale if I lived there.

panth 8/19/05, 8:15 AM EDT
Mactard- Given the epistemology of dissent, how efficacious is a general, wholesale execration? Wouldn’t nuance bring more consequence to your divertissement?

jonahan 8/19/05, 3:14 PM EDT
Just FYI, in Tiger you can do a control-Apple-D over any of the words in the above post to see what they mean. ;-)

paul 8/29/05, 6:52 PM EDT
i live about 30 minutes from where this happened. from what i've seen of the south so far, i must say that this does not suprise me.

 Deep Thoughts
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
