Even I Couldn't Make This Up!
Anyone who has used Microsoft Windows, or even just read about it, knows that Microsoft has serious security issues. These issues are caused by simple programming errors which are directly caused by Microsoft programmers, or from the outsourcing of code to programmers. I really don’t think that anyone could answer whose fault it really is, but some other companies have made a lot of money because of Microsoft security holes. Like, for instance, Norton Anti-Virus (made by Symantec), and MacAfee antivirus. Both are the leaders of the “War Against Viruses”. Yes that makes me laugh, also.

So now Microsoft has looked into these antivirus programs and thought, why are these people making money off of our security flaws? Why haven’t we made our own anti-virus program? Believe it or not, that’s what Microsoft is going to do! They are now going into the antivirus software industry to work people over for some more money on their own programming flaws.

Yes, Microsoft is actually going to charge for their anti-virus program. Microsoft has issued media leaks about encoding an antivirus into Windows and at first it was going to be free for Windows users, (I also heard that they was going to make a Mac version and a Linux version) but now that Microsoft Anti-Virus is closer to reality, we now know that it will not be free and the poor Windows users will be fleeced yet again.

Spread the word people … tell your mother, father, or anyone who is looking into another computer that the Mac is the way to go. eMacs start out at $799.00, and for $999.00 you can get an eMac with a DVD Burner - not to mention that on all new Macs you receive a ton of free software like iLife ’04 and AppleWorks, just to name a few.

I know some will ask what right do I have to be critical about Microsoft. What do I know about Microsoft ? Well I am a Microsoft Certified Professional in case you were wondering.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Any company that thinks that the web browser and media player are part of the operating system, while virus protection and security aren't doesn't understand what an OS really is. Do you really want a company like that designing your computer's OS? If so, you get what you pay for (and what hackers and virus writers send to you after you've paid for it).

Jonahan 6/21/04, 11:46 AM EDT
Cosmic Stan, that was much too coherent. Are you off your meds again?

I think that Microsoft is brilliant that they can create a market out of sheer lazyness, incompetence, and mediocrity.

Tons of suckers will by this MicroSoft Anti-Virus, too, because they have money and won't know any better.

Wise up and get a Mac, people! Or at least run Lindows or something... This year I'm voting ABB (anyone but Billy).

Oh, sorry...

Flapjacks did a flip flop and the whole world is spinning at an incredible rate but we won't fall off!

Bang! There goes the Universe!

Ahhhhh..... there's the Cosmic Stan we know and love! Got any dirt on WWDC yet, buddy?

Only a complete idiot wouldn't see how completely ass-backwards this latest Microsoft plan is. Hey Microsoft, how about fixing the vulnerabilities in the OS?!? What a thought. No instead we'll charge people for us to find viruses exploiting our bugs!

Of course, this is completely wrong-headed. But, of course, the world is almost entirely populated by complete idiots. So, I'm sure MS won't get any flak for it at all. (Gee, imagine if Apple had announced something like this?)

Dan P 6/21/04, 4:34 PM EDT
Ok, lets see here. We've got a company that has created the buggiest, and biggest security risk of an os.

Now they want people to trust them to create an antivirus program that will stop the virii?

One has to wonder it this will become a new virus and trojan delivery system

What I'm waiting for is for Micro[doodoo]'s iTunes "killer" (WMP 10) to be exploited as a virus conduit...

It'd be interesting if they really did make a "Microsoft Anti-Virus:mac" version. They could bundle it in with Office 2004:mac to help with macro viruses (which AFAIK, represent 99.44 percent of the virus threat on this platform). It would probably also get better reviews (and in fact, simply be better) than the Windows AV program, just like Office:mac.

Also, I bought a lifetime membership to Linspire when they were available for $100. I look at it primarily as a backup plan. Eventually, I do plan to buy a cheap PC to install it on and play around with. I figure now that OS X has dragged me into learning Unix a bit, Linspire shouldn't be that hard.

Johnathan -

Keep reading my articles and you will be on your way :)

I have a few more ideas I'm working on.

I find Microsoft completely entertaining. They now have a "Get the Facts Roadshow" going around Europe on why Microsoft is a better deal than Linux. They keep quoting the Forrester report. The report was a project to guage the security and bug fix capability of windows and several versions of Linux. Microsoft continually goes back to this report to show how secure they are and how good they are at fixing bugs. However, they do the typical pick and choose. They were okay in some aspects, but check out my favorite quote:

Microsoft’s average of 25 days between disclosure and release of a fix was the lowest of all the platform maintainers we evaluated. Microsoft also addressed all of the 128 publicly disclosed
security flaws in Windows during our 12-month evaluation period. However,
Microsoft needs to work on its percentage of high-severity vulnerabilities: ICAT classified 67% of Microsoft’s vulnerabilities as high severity, placing Microsoft dead last
among the platform maintainers by this metric.

Sort of tells the whole story here I think. Microsoft can claim that the security holes they have are by far the worst!

Here is the link to the report if you care to read:

Funny. I respect M$ for their courage to just say something like that out load ... and they don't even blush while doing.

But then again ... the presentation version of about any new Windose version crashed on the initial presentation and all Gates did was sit there and smile like Ronald McDonalds.

If M$ was a small company i'd laugh over something like that, but unfortunately they poison 90% of the world with their crap. Somehow it's not funny anymore.

personally, i really don't think that any amount of anti-virus software could ever even try to put a dent in the package of security flaws we call windows. But let em try. It'll be amusing. hehehe.

I bet when the neanderthal kids would make a snowman, someone would always end up saying, "Don't forget the thick, heavy brows." Then they would all get embarrassed because they remembered they had the big hunky brows too, and they'd get mad and eat the snowman.
