 Hardware Round Up
Let's start with the iBook line. The iBooks had a complete refresh. Every iBook now ships with Airport Extreme built in. Apple also introduced a sub $1000 iBook to the store. The 12" iBook is now listed at $999.

Specs:

12 inch
1.2GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @1.2GHz
12-inch TFT Displays
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM

All in all, it was a nice revamp of the iBook line. For those of you looking at a PowerBook refresh before Christmas, you better look elswhere. According to David Moody, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Mac Product Marketing, Apple fans shouldn't expect new or revamped PowerBooks before Christmas. "This new line-up of iBooks, along with the current PowerBooks we have will make up the complete portable line-up we will be offering for the holidays." Looks like MacWorld for the PowerBook refresh. I would also look for some exciting things to happen in hte PowerBook line. The 14" iBook is pretty close to the specs for the 12" PowerBook. The PowerBooks are due.

PowerMac G5

There is a new addition to the PowerMac family, a single processor 1.8 GHz version. This is a good addition to the line if you need more expandability than the iMac G5 can give you. If you compare specs, the machines are almost identical.

PowerMac G5
1.8GHz PowerPC G5
600MHz frontside bus
512K L2 cache
256MB DDR400 SDRAM
Expandable to 4GB SDRAM
80GB Serial ATA
8x SuperDrive
Three PCI Slots
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
64MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem
$1499

And that is not all. They also bumped up the storage on the Xserve RAID product to 5.2 TB of storage (that's Terra-byte = 5.2 butt loads of memory). I won't bore the 2 Guy's readers on specs for this one, but suffice it to say that for IT type guys, the price point is utterly stimulating (yes, that sort of thing stimulates those guys).

Latest and Greatest:

New iPods are here. Apple announced at a press conference three new models of iPods. The biggest news is a Photo iPod. The latest version of the iPod has a color screen that is capable of displaying photos and album cover art. It will ship in two configurations a 40 Gig and 60 Gig model. There is a connector on the dock that allows you to connect the iPod to a television for displaying images as a slideshow.

They also released a Special Edition U2 iPod that is black with a red click wheel.

The U2 iPod will have the band members signatures laser engraved on the back.

It will come with some extra goodies like a limited edition poster and a $50 dollar gift certificate to the iTunes Store (I am not clear whether this is only valid for an upcoming release of the entire U2 catalog - check back for updates).

iPod Photo Specs:

The new iPods will sync with iPhoto or Photoshop. They are reported to sport a 15 hour battery life.

I actually ordered my 12 inch iBook last night. It's a great deal! Make sure you get the HD upgraded, I got an 80GB. 30GB is not enough to store any iPod user's library and still be usuable as a mac.

wow 500 for an ipod thats crazy.

nhmacusr 10/27/04, 8:42 AM EDT
$599. Remember that the original 40 Gigs were $499 as well. I am not real sure about the $599 mark either. Luckily, I won't be in the market for a fw months :)

I'm watching the Quicktime Press conference from yesturday. The color screen is going to really hit the battery(I kind of thought it would). You will get 15 hours if you are playing music. Only 5 hours of continuous slide shows. Of course, the TV out will also hit it greatly.

Price point for the entire U2 catalog (400 + Tracks) available in November $149. Not bad.

sweetjimmyhugs 10/27/04, 10:21 AM EDT
Yeah, but if you're doing a slideshow you can use the dock to power it.

Jonahan 10/27/04, 11:40 AM EDT
New stuff is good! Now I'm contemplating getting an iBook and selling my 12" Powerbook ... although, I'm not sure I would get a good price for it with iBook having almost the same specs!

Also, Griffin announced a blac k iTrip to go along w/ the U2 iPod, the first "special edition" iPod accessory. Mark this day in history ;)

serpico 10/28/04, 9:13 PM EDT
I don't think anyone is going to make a 5 hour slideshow ! I wouldn't want to watch 5 hours of someone's photos ! LOL.

I just ordered the U2 ipod for my wife, she's a big nut over them. Her first Apple product, she's a PC user.

nhmacusr 10/29/04, 10:04 AM EDT
Nice work! Ease her into the fold gradually. It is easier on everyone that way :)
