I know by now you have all at least heard of Linux, which is something that could not be said two years ago. Many of you know someone who uses it, or hosts their (or your) Website on it. Fewer have tried using it yourself, and fewer yet are using it on a day-to-day basis. I am one of those "geeky" few that use Linux everyday: as a desktop, a firewall and a server (Web, database, and file server). I am by no means an expert, but I love to tinker with it and learn about it and other new technologies. And as it turns out, Linux may be applying a little more pressure to Microsoft than Microsoft will admit (and/or are prepared to deal with).
According to this article on PCWorld.com, "A recent SG Cowen Securities survey of more than 500 North American IT users found that more than 80 percent of respondents were currently using Linux and that more than half planned to increase their use of the open-source operating system within the next two years". There are a lot of interesting facts from the original survey (which I could not find) about Linux starting to claim a bit more of the current market share among corporations in the US. The report goes on to say, "Linux is likely to gain share of [application and database tier workloads] faster than any other platform, including Windows." Although this is not good news for Microsoft, it is worse news for UNIX who (according to the survey) will have the most significant drop of usage and implementation. The Mac OS was not mentioned in this article, but I would love to see some of the same stats as they apply to OS X.
This info, combined with all the recent FUD distribution by Ballmer and Gates, goes further to illustrate the fact that Microsoft is, indeed, running scared!

Actually Microsoft is trying to duplicate Linux. Microsoft is reported to be studying Linux to understand how the core works. Funny though is being free my be linux demise when Microsoft finally steals it place their name on it and sells it.

Microsoft would never steal someone else's product, put their name on it, and sue the original developer for copying a MS product.
Never!
Just like I'd never put my underpants on my head and run around the house naked shouting, "Who's the bald pink gibbon now? Who's the bald pink gibbon now?"

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Good link, rlhamon! A huge laugh in there is Ron Enderle, M$ butt kisser extraordinare, talks about how M$ is studying how Linux works. Yeah, that Enderle is always on the lookout for new stuff, as soon as M$ notices it, that is! One thing I'm hoping for is that Apple has already made the switch to a unix base, and the supremely object oriented nature of Cocoa and the OS X frameworks will allow them to crank out further improvements and innovations, and widen their lead before Longhorn gets out the door (2006? 2007? ha ha)

Last article I read on Longhorn said the release may now be as late as 2008 (though the more likely date was 2006-07).
By then, OS X will be almost OS XI.
Switch now, Windows sheep! Switch now!

Deep Thoughts |

When you're ten years old, and a car drives by and splashes a puddle of water all over you, it's hard to decide if you should go to school like that or try to go home and change and probably be late. So while he was trying to decide, I drove by and splashed him again.
