iMac G5 and OS X Panther: A Switcher's Review |
|
Beggars CAN be choosers. Especially when you have computer-illiterate parents. I told them I wanted an iMac G5 with a SuperDrive, and BANG!, there, under the tree, was an iMac-shaped box. Now, some people will tell you that Macs aren’t compatible with Windows. WRONG. I transferred all of my files over my network (Macs do that better too), I sorted them, and voila! They all worked with everything.
Now onto my review of the iMac… (I can hear you salivating.)
Initial impression: This computer is sexier than Pam. (Not the cooking spray, the actress.) And then I turned it on. All I had to do was give Apple some of my info, plug I my Ethernet cable, create my account, and BAM!, it worked. Snappy and gorgeous. Quartz is better than I thought. Everything was so pretty. Now, on to the apps.
I didn’t like Mail.app or Safari initially, so I got Firefox and Thunderbird - which was what I used on the PC. I stayed with Thunderbird but I switched back to Safari because it was faster. The one gripe I had was the one-button mouse. So I went out and bought a new, wireless, 3-button mouse that worked as soon as I plugged it in. I didn’t like iChat either, because I had worked really hard on aliasing all my buddies, and they didn’t show up. So I tried Adium, and it showed the aliases. Everything worked so fast and was so pretty! I almost started to dry-hump the iMac at one time, but I didn’t want to hurt it. I can’t imagine how this can get much better after what I’ve heard of Tiger.
Don’t underestimate those speakers that come with the iMac. They play rather well, although they lack a bit of volume. Songs that have a lot of stereo effects sound great. I’m listing to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and the stereo parts sound wonderful. The music sounds like it’s coming out of nowhere. I can’t quite place where it comes from. It's almost like surround-sound. The speakers are a bit weak on the bass end, but I don’t listen to bassy music anyway. WOAH! These speakers are good. I just heard something I’ve never heard before in "The Final Cut" by Pink Floyd. Plus I can run everything, and not have it slow down a bit.
Well, that’s all for today, folks. You’ll be hearing from me again soon.

The original i-macs are more ergonomically humpable in my opinion.

I laughed out loud at the "dry hump" line. I'm glad you enjoy your iMac!

Why did you have to plug in a wireless mouse?

Blueteeth, maybe because it's NOT a bluetooth mouse. For example, you have to plug in a USB receiver thing with Logitech wireless mice.

OK. I thought it was great! Besides, we're not looking for an in-depth review of Panther here: It's just a guy who's never had a mac before giving his impressions. Keep it coming, Faramir!

True, it's not what you would traditionally call a review, but it is close enough, and a great description of your first impression/experience with your new iMac. And congrats, on what has to be the best gift anyone could get for Christmas - besides a fully loaded 17 inch PowerBook... *drool*

Deep Thoughts |
|
Sometimes, when I drive across the desert in the middle of the night, with no other cars around, I start imagining: What if there were no civilization out there? No cities, no factories, no people? And then I think: No people or factories? Then who made this car? And this highway? And I get so confused I have to stick my head out the window into the driving rain---unless there's lightning, because I could get struck on the head by a bolt.
