Grade A Gadget - This one is the Pants! |
|
There are many cassette adapters out there for iPods. I have used more than a few. They usually end up under the seat of my Jeep with twisted and knotted chords.
Griffen technologies has a way of taking good ideas to the next level. Enter the SmartDeck.
Before you hum and haw, hear me out. This cassette adapter is different. Take a really close look at the plug. That's right, it plugs into the iPod control socket.
The SmartDeck takes the input from your normal cassette controls and transforms them into codes the iPod will understand. For instance, if you press FF (Fast Forward) on your deck, the iPod will skip to the next track. If you press RW (Rewind) the iPod will skip to the previous track.
It will work for any stereo control that is in your car, even steering wheel controls. If the controls were meant to control your cars cassette deck, the SmartDeck will transform them into commands the iPod can understand.
From Griffen:
SmartDeck Features and Benefits
* Control iPod navigation through the car stereo
* Intelligent level control for optimal cassette player input levels
* Features highest-quality cassete tape head for crystal clear quality
* Sets optimal volume on the iPod for best audio quality
* Seamless integration between iPod and car stereo
Go check it out for yourself:
Griffen Technology Smart Deck
The SmartDeck is going to retail for $24.99. They aren't shipping yet, but they are accepting pre-orders. To let you know what a top notch outfit Griffen is, they won't charge your card until they ship the product.
The SmartDeck recieved a Best of Show award at Macworld San Francisco. I am going to give it a preliminary 4 out of 5 pants just because I haven't heard it for myself yet. A couple of friends that were at the show said it was awesome. When I get mine, I will update the review accordingly. |

One sad fact to the article. Griffin can only sell a lot of that SmartDeck in U.S. Reason is that most cars outside US no longer have tape players; it's been mostly CD players in cars outside U.S. for like the past 10 years.
Now, if Griffin can make a CD version of Smartdeck.... ;P

I'm late to the party, but my pants-legs flew off when I saw this product.
Too bad I only have a CD player in my PT and am limited to FM transmitters :(

I just ordered a silver ipod mini. then i ordered the kensington car charger and cassette adapter in the same set, which made the total price for both $26. Thats a cheaper alternative than buying both seperatly. But this smartdeck thing is pretty nifty
