How to burn a CD in WinMe
Step 1, buy shotgun, Step 2 blow a %?#@*&! hole in the computer Step 3 buy a Mac

Ok, let me explain my situation to you. I own a 14" G3 700 MHz iBook and a 600 MHz G4 PowerMac and I love both of my computers dearly. My dad still has a Dell Dimension 4100 running Windows Me.

(shudder)

I know what you are thinking and you would be right. All of it. Yes, even that last nasty mean thought. You are right. The entire setup is $!@? through and through. However I decided to back up his files so if (when) something went wrong he wouldn't lose too much data. Now is when the pain began.

Phase 1, setup
First I inserted a blank CD. Now WinMe didn't know what to do with this so the Adaptec Easy CD Creator Wizard pops up telling me that I must format this disk for it to work. Ok. So I click "format". Away we go. Spontaneously Adaptec quits. Now, the CD has been formated so I think I am ok.

Phase 2, copying
Ok, so I drag all of my files onto the CD. I begin to think "gee, this is pretty easy. I have almost forgotten why I hated Windows so much." Almost. Anyway, as if in answer to my unspoken idea God seemed to say "I shall smite thee for that thought". And smite me he did.

Phase 3, pain
Ok, now, if you are using OS X all you would do at this point is to control-click the disk and hit "burn". Easy huh? So for some reason I tried to do that in Me. I right clicked on the CD in the 'F' drive, no dice. I tried the menu in the window that the contents of the 'F' drive was displayed in, no dice. I looked for a tool, app anything that would just burn this data. (I know, I have been away from this evil for so long that I began to forget how much effort it takes to do ANYTHING). Ah ha, I think I might have something. I see the Adaptec Folder in my Applications folder and I think "there in lies my solution."

Phase 4, confusion
Ok, this is the list of various Adaptec programs that I have to "help" me burn a CD.

- CD-Eraser
- DirectCD Wizard
- Scan Disk
- Create CD
- CD Copier
- Easy CD Creator

So I try "Creat CD", that seems like a fairly logical thing to do right? I mean, I have already used one Adaptec app to format a CD, so I shouldn't have a problem right? Say it with me now: WRONG!

Now I can see the files on the CD in the 'F' drive. But when I boot up this CD creator crap I am informed that I have nothing on that drive. . . ? Ok. So I drag my files again and click create CD. What does it tell me? "This operation cannot be completed because Adaptec does not have access to the CD Burner. It is in use by Adaptec." WHAT? Ok, Adaptec can't use the CD burner because it is currently in use by Adaptec? What kind of crap is this? So I quit all running processes in the background in hopes of getting it working. Nope, same thing. I spend a good few minutes before I finally open up NOT the CD Creator but the Wizard (you remember, this was the one that quit on me for no reason at the beginning). Anyway, I go through that and it pretty much says that I have to click "OK" for it to burn then eject my CD. I click OK and the nightmare ends.

Total Time Wasted: 30 min.
Total Curse Words Uttered: 42
Doing the same task in under 2 min. in OS X, priceless.

What a painful rendition. I feel for you brother.

Ironically, Microsoft stole Roxio's soul, and used the innards from their CD apps to power the burning wizard in XP, which, dare I say, isn't too hard to use, and is similar to Mac OS X's behavior.

I still prefer burning on OS X. Nero, Clone CD and Alcohol are great programs, but so far nothing came near the simplicity of X. *shrugs*

It's pretty simple to burn a CD in XP, but it's just more intuitive in OSX. You just drag it to the trash to get it out of your computer like any CD, DVD, or drive, and it will burn it. In XP you have a sidebar icon in the window you can click.

 Deep Thoughts
If you want to be the popular one at a party, here's a good thing to do: Go up to some people who are talking and laughing and say, "Well, technically that's illegal." It might fit in with what somebody just said. And even if it doesn't, so what, I hate this stupid party.
