 Today in Mac News 10/25
Today's Mac world saw it's ups, it's downs and it's sweet delicious hacks. Here's what you may have missed while you were busy having a life.

-The biggest news of the day is that a hacked version of Front Row has been released on Bittorrent. I first saw this atThe Unnoficial Apple Weblog where a user sent them a movie of Front Row running on a Mac Mini. Front Row is undoubtedly the coolest feature of the new iMac,
but the iMac isn't really suited for the living room. The Mac Mini, however, is perfect for the living room, and so this has gotten the Mac web understandably excited. I got Front Row running perfectly on my 1 Ghz 12" PowerBook with 512MB RAM, except for DVD player (big deal) and of course I am missing the Remote.

-Devoted1 today released a iPod Shuffle lanyard/cap replacement that when combined withe the iPod Shuffle looks like a large white crucifix with a play button. This makes the iPod Shuffle the perfect accessory for those boring sermons, allowing you to rock out with your God out. (Bonus points to anyone listening to Heresy, by Nine Inch Nails while in church.)

-Prepare to be insanely jealous; Researchers at the University of California at Irvinve have created the worlds highest resolution grid based display out of 25 PowerMac G5's, and 50 Apple Cinema Displays that measures nearly 23 x 9 feet called HIPerWall. According to the page; "HIPerWall will be used to bring alive a variety of research data – from biomedical to climate datasets, and from numerical data to medical imaging to satellite photography". That's all fine and great, but the question everyone really wants to know is how does porn look on that thing? How about T.V. shows from the iTMS?

-iTunes hits it's 600 Millionth download according to iTunes vice president Eddy Cue. Congrats Apple, now lets get moving on more T.V. shows like Family Guy, The Office, or Arrested Development!

-Samsung has introduced a behemoth of a laptop, a 19" laptop that weighs almost 10 lbs. While this story isn't Apple news per-se, it should help convince apple to finally release their 30" PowerBook (click for image) they have been sitting on for a while now just to one-up Samsung. I mean it's obvious that pictures genuine, just look at the included "Super-Duper Drive" that not only burns CDs and DVDs, but also Laser Discs!

-In the "No-Shit-Sherlock category", Paul Murphy point out what we have been screaming for years, Macs are actually cheaper then their PC counterparts. In this latest comparison, Paul points out that the new Quad processor G5 is a far better deal then anything the wintel world can trow at it, costing from $3000 to $12000 less than it's competitors (with worse specs then the G5 in most cases). And that is WITH a display. So to all those PC-idiots out there who say "A mac costs $5500 and I can get a Windows machine that looks like a cow tit at my local crap-mart for only 12 cents!" Read the article, and go FSCK yourself with your mouse.

-On a sad note Rosa Parks died Monday. Apple has a very nice Tribute dedicated to her memory, and I would encourage everyone to read it.

That's it for todays Look at Mac News, tune in tomorrow for the next Today in Mac News, hopefully it will be earlier in the day.

Nice write up iKen. Is the FrontRow really a 'hacked' version, or did they just put up the app bundle?

iKen 10/26/05, 7:34 AM EDT
It really is Hacked, from what I understand Front Row looks for some kind of authentication, that this Hack took out, and the Hack allows you to control Front Row from your keyboard.

nhmacusr 10/26/05, 3:18 PM EDT
Ya, I read that it looks for the IR reciever. That's kind of a hokey way to implement it. You should be able to control it from the keyboard reguardless.

 Deep Thoughts
To us, it might look like just a rag. But to the brave, embattled men of the fort, it was more than that. It was a flag of surrender. And after that, it was torn up and used for shoe-shine rags, so the men would look nice for the surrender.
