The dumbest thing I have ever heard of.
NOTE - This has been found to be a hoax, but it's still funny all the same!

This almost seems like a Monty Python sketch, or a really bad April Fools joke. But no, it's true. The rock band Metallica, well known for leading the way in shutting down Napster, trying to sue 335,435 people sharing their songs, and refusing to sell their music on the iTunes Music Store, is at it again. In an apparent attempt to make more money, Metallica has hit a new low by filing suit against an independent rock band from Canada called Unfaith over the use of the cords E & F.

I am going to say that again, because it is so stupid it warrants being repeated. The rock band Metallica, is suing another rock band called Unfaith over the use of the cords E & F, two cords on the musical scale, regularly used by musicians.

Metallica is claiming that Unfaith using E & F is "unsanctioned usage of two chords [metallica] has been using since 1982". Metallica's Lars Ulrich says "People are going to get on our case again for this, but try to see it from our point of view just once, We're not saying we own those two chords, individually - that would be ridiculous. We're just saying that in that specific order, people have grown to associate E, F with our music."

But that's not all. Guess what they are trying to get in retribution for their severe mental and physical suffering? Quoted from mtv.com "Ulrich states that he's not trying to prevent Unfaith from using the two chords, only that he feels Metallica should be credited for them whenever used, and is calling for 50% of all revenue generated from any song using them. "

No, this isn't made up. This is real.

MTV Says so

Homina homina homina <* bangs head against wall*>

From the MTV.com link:

"It's just a matter of a band having the right to protect the chords it uses. I couldn't start up my own soft drink company using the exact same formula as Coca-Cola." — Jill Pietrini, Metallica's lawyer

Righhhht. The exact same formula. Actually it would be more like Pepsi suing Coca-Cola for using sugar and water in it's products. These guys are seriously messed up!

I just plugged in my amp and I'm playing as many E's and F's as I can before Metallica sues all of us over it!

Amazing Rando 7/16/03, 10:34 PM EDT
I dont know. I am actually fine with all of this. They have that right to protect themselves. Now if they were going to try to sue over the 'G' Note, I would go on a killing spree. But since they arent, I guess I am okay with it.

umm...anyone check the url?
if these are supposed to be articles on mtv.com and metallica.com, then why are they on www1.scoopthis.com.

hoax anyone? pretty damn funny one, i must admit, but a hoax nonetheless.

Jonahan 7/16/03, 11:11 PM EDT
Well 411mania.com is the only 'legit' domain and they just link to the MTV and Metallica "pages" that are actually on the scoopthis.com domain. So...yeah, "upon further review" it does look like a hoax. Thanks Jeff ;)

I think metallica is just trying to protect their rights just like any other American and are *COUGHeogtisticbastards.*
That being said.....

Metallica sues there fans for "stealing" their music, and then sues their "competitors" for not being unlike them....

Metallica = Microsoft?

Jonahan 7/17/03, 9:24 AM EDT
Some news sites have run something about this as well. Check Google news. Looks like we're not the only dolts around...which is actually kind of disheartening as I thought we were the only ones.

;)

Dead Bolt 7/17/03, 8:48 PM EDT
this is pretty dumb, it's like Target suing Canada for their use of red and white. hell, Coca Cola might want to get in on this one too, they use red and white...

Duh 7/24/03, 12:24 PM EDT

When I was kid there was crayon called "Flesh" but it's gone now. Couldn't it at least be brought back as "Caucasian" or would that just piss off the other crayons?
