 Install iLife on Older Macs
I got iLife today, after patiently waiting for a couple weeks after pre-ordering it. As soon as I got it I immediately tore it open and went to start installing. I was horrified to see the message "iLife can not be installed because your resolution is too small", when I tried to install it on my original iBook. (800X600 on that bad mamma-jamma) Not to be outdone I opened Terminal and found the path to the "Packages" folder on the CD, and using the Finders "go" command I was able to install iPhoto. (The only iLife app I wanted for my iBook) Here's how I did it:

1. Insert iLife CD.
2. From the Finder click on "Go" at the top.
3. Choose "Go To Folder"
4. Type in the following exactly as it is, without the quotes: "/Volumes/Install CD/Packages/"
5. Click "Go"

Now you can double click on any of the packages to open them! Have fun with iLife!

Nice job iKen! Too bad so many other Mac sites don't pick up the nifty tips from around here.

Ken,

Do you think iDVD can be used with a DP 533? The minimum requirements I've heard are a G4 700. Thanks.

I wouldn't see why not. (as long as you have a dvd burner of course) Apple will post high minimum requirements for stuff like this sometimes. Who knows why. But since you have a Power Mac G4, and especially since it is a dual, I don't think you will have any problems what so ever.

BTW mad props on the dual 533, I got a single proc 533 as my main machine, and I wish I would have gotten the dual. The only reason I didn't is because I didn't want to wait for it. (They were mail only) I wanted it right then.

Thank you very much - worked great on my original iBook, as well as my Cube & iMac FP

Hey, how about garage band on a PowerBook G4 Ti 500Mhz, has anyone tried it?

okcalla 1/18/04, 12:38 PM EDT
they probably post high requirements so that people cant sue for stupid crap and there processor being borderline able to run the app. although the resolution is a problem not too many people are still using 800 by 600.

Can't u also cmd-click on the install icon alias and select Show Original, then use the install iPhoto.mpkg icon? That's also the way to re-install just one of the iApps.

Garage band works great on my 533 Mhz Power Mac G4

It isn't actually in the ilife installer icon. The icon is an alias to the program in a hidden folder. The Packages are in a hidden folder as well, but it can't hide from the terminal, which is how I figured out how to install iPhoto directly. (this method will allow you to install just one of the iApps as well)
