Put The Knife Down and Step Away From The Mac |
|
Ok, we debated posting this because number one, it can be kind of disturbing to someone who appreciates quality workmanship and design, and two, we don't really want to give much attention to the person who did it. But the cat is already out of the bag, since MacSlash (and probably others) have mentioned it, plus on second thought we're all about being disturbing, so what the hell.
If the site's not too busy you can see what we're talking about at overclockers.com. Some ... person (we won't say kid because you can be 35 and still live under your parents roof) got a dual-processor PowerMac G5 for Christmas. Most people would be overjoyed, even if they didn't like Macs, right? You can run Linux or some BSD on it, or even VirtualPC if Windows happens to be your thing.
But no. This kid (person! person! sorry.) thought that it was way too much computer for him, so he (or she, as the persons name is Andy, but we'll use 'he' for the article) gutted it and replaced it with different hardware. The reason given for the Frankenstinian makeover is that he didn't "have any programs for Apple and didn’t feel like waiting for them." (Yeah, that's right: "programs for Apple")
Andy goes on to say that, "I thought about selling it, but my parents would be upset with me. After all, this was a very expensive gift and it meant a lot to them to give to me."
He then proceeds to just give away the G5's parts to his Mac-using friend. Just gives away over $2000 worth of parts.
Righhhht.
I don't know about you, but even if this was some alternate dimension where I didn't like Macs (perish the thought), I would still ground my kid for probably the rest of his natural life if he gave away over $2000 in parts. I don't think we can expect as much as a spanked bottom though, because as Andy states: "It’s a good thing my parents don’t know anything about computers, because I’m sure they would be really angry if they knew what I did".
So to pose a question - why in the world did Andy's parents buy him a dual-processor PowerMac G5 if they didn't know anything about computers? There's more than meets the eye here, and we'll get to the bottom of it, by crikey.
Are his parents Mac users? Will they administer a beating that will leave him looking like Michael Jackson? Is there an anti-Mac corporation that goes around buying G5's and then taking them apart for sinister purposes?
Whatever. Apple still makes sales, and Mac-using friends still get parts to make lego-Mac-G5s or something.
Anyhow, if there are any other overclockers out there that happen to get a G5 PowerMac for Christmas, but would just rather run Windows, you can always send the innards to us. Heck send us the PowerMac, we'll gut it for you and send it back free of charge! We'll pay the shipping both ways, and even throw in the motherboard of your choice. On second thought, we won't even restrict the deal to G5's: send us any Macs you don't want. We'll find a home for them. |

Unless this kid is REALLY good with a dremel, this has got to be made up. There are no motherboards out there that could line up with the huge G5 case. If he got the PCI slots lined up he would not be able to use any of the built on ports or connectors. I say BOLOGNA! Speaking of which, I feel hungry.

Man, this has to be the most twisted compliment to the Apple Design Group ever...
The day some crazy open-source effort comes up with a really fast pentium emulator (think Virtual PC on 64-bit steroids,) this kid's gonna kick himself silly...
Sweetjimmyhugs: VPC ain't G5 compatible, yet...

His twisted and weak logic just SCREAMS out that he is, indeed, a child... What a sad waste of some very fine engineering. At least he admits it's the best designed CASE he's ever seen in his life...

Oh ya, now I remember, he is the same kid who got a new Aston Martin V12 Vanquish for Christmas, didn't like the looks of it and put a Honda aero package on it.
REEEEKS of either a truly spolied little brat or an article to stoke the ire of Mac users.

I'm betting it wasn't a gift, I'm betting it was stolen and he couldn't sell it online or something. He'd have to be 10 or something to think this was a good idea. Simple economics. Considering the cheap crap he put in it and his ridiculous statement on SCSI vs. SATA (I'd be happy to debate the merits of that statement on a single user platform and how he wated huge amounts of money on 2x36.4GB SCSI Drives)
