HP invents a cool technology. No really. |
|
Well, here's something different. Hewlett-Packard is breaking away from the norm of creating everyday warmed over PC products, and actually invented something cool. According to a PC World article, HP invented a CD/DVD burning technology that allows the disc to be flipped over, and an image burned on the top of the disc.
The New technology, called LightScribe, will cost around $10 more for the drives, and around a dime more per disk. A cost well justified, I say. It looks pretty bad-ass. We should see these things hit the market in about 6 months on Hitachi-LG, MicroVision, Mitsubishi Chemical, Moser Baer India, Sonic Solutions, and Toshiba drives.
Hopefully Apple will follow in the PC industries footsteps for once, and adapt this technology in to their drives.

yep..."DiscT@2" - pronounced disk tatoo. I think it worked on the edges, not the flip-side.

That's right cbk, it doesn't print it on the "top" of the cd, it puts it around the edges of the cdr... effectively cutting down the amount of data the disk can store.

DiskT@2 was a feature of the Yamaha CRW-F1, which was one of the best CD-R drives anyone ever built. It used the empty space after the end of the data (if there was any) for burning pits close together in the shape of letters. How well you could see this depended on what color your media was. With the right media it really worked. Unfortuantely, not even that could keep Yamaha from leaving the market shortly after the CRW-F1 shipped.

Apple doesn't make drives, they buy them from OEM suppliers like everyone else. Thus far they seem to prefer Pioneer and Sony, neither of which is in that list of LightScribe licensees. But, hey, if the idea catches on and sells well...

One thing about my Aunt Nadie: She was gruff on the outside, but if you ever needed something, like a spanking or a scolding, she'd give it to you.
