Apple Computers Are Just that Good!
I was just listening to Steve Jobs latest analyst meeting via a conference call and Jobs was talking about why they haven't sold that many new Macs to professionals. He said "They've been happy with their computer and can still use them for everything that they do. Many of our professionals say maybe next year they'll get a new Mac - they've been saying that for the past three years." I read that and I didn't really put much thought into what Steve was saying, until I realized professionals update about every three years. So if they were supposed to update three years ago today their systems are 6+ years old, and running strong.

Now most would say "so what, if someone wanted to work on a six year old computer, let them". The thing is, how many other six year old computers that you know of can do everything that professional graphic artist, Webmasters, multimedia designers, etc. need and still do it so well that they don't feel the need to upgrade? Which leads me to my point: Apple has always built great computers. But are they too good?

If they took the route of most computer manufactures and built computers that were rated for two years, would people still by them? Would people take time out of there day to make Websites to declare there love for Macs? Would Apple still have a portion of the market that they have, even though most people feel that it a very small market? Would Apple still be in business?

The answers that I have for all of the preceding questions is that Apple builds awesome machines, and almost too good of a machine. Macs work so well that people don't see the need to buy a new one after a couple of years. Which is why most of the people who visit this site are happy to announce that they own the best computer that runs the best operating system, and is built by the best computer manufacturer in the world. Not to mention a company that has large majority of it's crop from six years ago still in productive use --- and that alone speaks volumes.

I may be beating a dead horse, but some people may not know this.... the resale value of a Mac is just insane! Macs hold their value far longer than any other type of computer.

I think you hit the nail right on the head here, rlhamon =^)

Wow...hitting the nail on the head...beating a dead horse... I think I need to work off some pent up aggression or something! So where's the nearest Windoid???? ;) j/k of course!

When i gave my dad my old PowerMac 5200 it replaced his Apple IIe (18y/o), which was handed down to an uncle who still uses it to keep the books of his small construction company. the 5200(8y/o) got handed off to someone else when i gave my dad my old Biege G3(4y/o) this year.
so including my new iMac, thats four apples with a combined age of 30years all going strong.

Maybe Market share should be measured as units in use. not units sold.

Oops... i left out the 'woz' Signiture IIgs, it around somewhere.

A Scientist I read about still uses a 7600 to control a large telescope. He bought a second 7600 incase something happens to the first. As a coincidence, I just fixed up a 7600 for my 10 year old cousin, set up OS 9 on it, it works great. I'll be upgrading it to OS X probably next year. My brother's HP tower (2 years old this christmas) fell apart on him, piece by piece, over the last year. Both the 7 year old 7600 (with the minor upgrades I added) and the HP go for almost the same price. How's that for durability?

I have a Quadra 700,still running, with 2 hard drives, no floppy anymore, an external Zip drive, running 8.1. I also have a Tangerine iMac with 288Mbs RAM running X.2, and I use them both, the iMac for the web, the Quadra for almost everything else. I don't do much else, to be honest, but I don't want to pay for a USB printer.

I guess we were all guilty, in a way. We all shot him, we all skinned him, and we all got a complimentary bumper sticker that said, "I helped skin Bob."
