Welcome to BatMUD, Online Since 14th, April 1990!
This game is text-based first of all. To some of you that might not be a turn-on, but to others it might just be your cup of tea. So, lets get into it. There are 33 different races, with 10 that are extra special races for what is called a rebirth. There are 5 different backgrounds with well over 30 guilds in which you can advance your character. There are hundreds of different skills and spells you can learn and there are always more things being added. BatMUD is never the same for long. There are, as of this review, 13,608 different rooms inside areas (Which doesn't cover some areas and none of the outer world map). There are well over 100 different areas you can explore to your hearts content. Most of them have very good descriptions and take you further into your imagination.

As of late, the focus has been getting new players to play. This was done with the addition of a new players (newbie) city, called Pleasantville, that you start off in and newbie helpers to answer any questions you may have on the newbie channel. I will be honest - BatMUD is a little hard to understand at first but it's really easy to get the hang of. There are level quests which, when completed, lower the cost of the level they're made for. For example, if you’re level 3 and complete the level 4 City Tour level quest then it costs half the experience for level 4. There are also area quests and player quests.

There are many, many things to do on BatMUD: you can keep yourself busy being a martial artist, merchant, ranger, barbarian, healer, druid, and much, much more. There is hardly ever a dull moment while playing. There are various events the wizards (coders of the game) run that keep you on your toes, including everything from bank robbers to tornadoes. You can get a group of your friends together to kill some monsters for experience or equipment. There are hundreds of different pieces of equipment in the game and more added fairly regularly. The player base is rather large at peak times it can usually get up to 450 different players. You can be yourself or someone totally different in the way you act.

There are also player conventions in which other players travel to meet one another. This is very fun indeed, lots of partying, and talking about the game. You'll find most of the players are nice while some are, well, assholes. But such is life, real or not.

It's heavily populated by PC users, but there are a few Mac geeks in the mix as well. All you need is Terminal and you're ready to go. There are indeed different clients to use, but to start off Terminal would be the easiest for most people. Just type in 'telnet bat.org 23' and you're ready to play.

BatMUD is indeed a very large and daunting world, but with a little time it will have you hooked. I have been for 10 years. But best of all ... it’s free. So if you happen to stop in be sure to give me a holler. Just 'tell ramjett hello' and I'll try to help you out.

Word! y'know, someone's just gotta break the ice on these comments sometimes.

I think BatMUD is cool, but I'd get going good, earn a few levels, and then BAM - DEAD!!!! I really suck.

I'll have to try out the new newbie area though. Definitely cool for non-GUI gamers like myself!

BatMUD, ShmatMUD..... Get further into your imagination indeed….. Your imagination sure needs to be somewhere cause all you're starin' at is text. Play a real GUI based game where ya get to watch articulated polygons bounce across the screen and pay 13 bucks a month to do it now that’s computin’!
