 Viva La Resistance! Or Something...
Mac OS X is definitely the best operating system in the world. We all agree on that. But if there is one thing that Mac OS X is behind on, it's software, namely games. Now most applications that are worth their weight are available for the Mac, but there are those few that we would all like to see on the Mac, but the developer just refuses to do so for some reason. Again, this is mostly games. So when there is a chance to have your voice heard on a software title, even if it isn't something you may want, it's important to stand behind such causes and let the software developers know that people use Mac OS X, and you want their support as well!

So today, I bring to you two such cases. The first one is Uru Ages beyond Myst. Which is a soon to be released MMORPG based on the worlds of Myst. It is currently only slated for release for Windows, which is a damn shame because ever since Myst the creators have gone to great lengths to release both Mac and Windows versions of the games. (In fact, Myst was originally made on Hypercard.) But there is an online petition to bring Uru to the Mac, and you can get to it Here and while your there, check out the second signature. :)

The second one is for AutoCAD. A high end 2D drafting and detailing and 3D design tool. It's used by more designers worldwide than any other CAD software, and there used to be a Mac version, but about 6 years or so ago they dropped their Mac support. Well, over on Apple's Hot news section you can send an e-mail to The AutoCAD product manager and tell him how much you would like to see his wonderful software on your OS of choice.

These are not the only ones out there, just the two I had seen most recently. There is always some software somewhere that is Windows only, and is the developer is just waiting for the demand to bring it over. Granted you may not use the program, but the more software titles, the better. So show your support for your favorite OS, and tell developers that developing for the Mac OS can be beneficial.

The problem with the PC games isn't that it would be hard to program a title for macs it's that for every game that one company sells 4 of that same title is pirated. So it just comes down to dollar and cents.
Example of this:http://www.pirated-downloads.com/
That's main reason that PS2, Xbox,Game Cubes will have thousands of titiles before life span will end.
As far as AutoCad screw them use a cad program that you can use for both win and mac. Bash Autocad until they make an Autocad for mac.

Right on! Don't developers have fingers upon which to do their sums? We might only be a small percentage of the overall personal computer (as opposed to PC) market, it's still a lot of units -- more than most PC manufacturers sell! So don't leave us Mac-users swinging -- woo us! We love it!

PS: This SOB of a site keeps telling me I'm using Internet Explorer -- yeah, and I also trim my toenails with a chainsaw! Not likely! Doesn't this joint speak Camino, my man! (OK, I adore Safari, but the bugger ain't finished enough for me yet!)

Jonahan 5/18/03, 9:03 AM EDT
Well poop. It's supposed to work with Camino, at least it did when Camino first changed names from Chimera. I'll look into it :)

Jonahan 5/18/03, 12:20 PM EDT
Stickman, what version are you using? I have .7 and it shows the Camino logo.

iKen 5/18/03, 7:31 PM EDT
Yeah, Camino shows the correct image for me as well....

stickman67 5/19/03, 12:05 AM EDT
I'm using .7, but it's a nightly build, so I guess there might be something in that. Safari lets you "pretend" to be other types of browsers, but I don't think you can do that in Camino. And it's still telling me I'm using IE! Maybe I should download a newer build ...

Jonahan 5/19/03, 4:17 PM EDT
Stickman, most likely your version of Camino has a different user agent than ours. Think you could do me a favor and go here:

http://2guys amacandawebsite.com/useragent.php

Then paste the results back in the comments? I don't wanna have the page yelling at ya for using IE ;)

Jonahan 5/19/03, 4:19 PM EDT
Also, getting back to the topic of the post, I started a forum thread about compiling a list of Mac-only games. This way we can rattle off a huge list of games that Windows users can't play!

stickman67 5/20/03, 9:16 AM EDT
Sorry this took a while. I'm on the other side of the world, and all that ...

Anyway, here 'tis:

Your user agent is: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)

WTF is this Windows sh*t!

Help me! Sweet Jeeeeesus, help me!

Jonahan 5/20/03, 10:25 AM EDT
Hey, no problem, I understand you're on a totally different time schedule ;)

However, I think you're a closet Windows user! Look down at your machine....is it a beige box? Have you gone mad from Windows usage and tricked yourself into thinking you're running OS X with Chimera?!?

Seriously tho - that's really wierd! I didn't think there was a way to set the user agent for chimera...maybe the author was playing a joke on one of those nightly builds? Or it just slipped by? Any way you slice it, that it too funny ;)

I have a small one ........... 5/21/03, 6:30 PM EDT

stickman67 5/21/03, 7:34 PM EDT
Oh yeah! I'm peeing in my pants ... this is soooo funny!

I have a B&W G3, upgraded to a G4 500MHz, and I love the old battle-axe. For her to be called a Windows machine ... Well, I just hope she doesn't read this post. I'm off to get a new nightly build of Camino before any of this gets out!

Jonahan 5/23/03, 8:29 AM EDT
Wow...that is just crazy ;)

stickman67 5/23/03, 9:04 PM EDT
OK, I'm back to Safari. It was playing up on me a bit, but the unexpected quits seem to have died down enough for me to use it as a serious browser again. No more mistaken identity for me! There is only *one* Safari! There seem to be any number of

Ashan McNealy 5/26/03, 11:28 AM EDT
hmmm, safari has yet to quit on me, in 2 months of use.

Jonahan 5/27/03, 9:05 PM EDT
That's really saying something - Safari has been relatively solid for me, but still crashes once in a while. It's not any worse than any other browser for OS X tho!

5/21/04, 11:31 PM EDT
Autocad???? Are you nuts??? Check out SolidWorks for a CAD product that is so much better than anything Autodesk has ever dreamed of buying and slapping their logo on and claiming that they thought of or designed. If there was ever a CAD package on the PC that has the quality of those designed for the MAC it is Solidworks.
