Mac OS X Settlement Protest |
|
I recently received a settlement claim form for the "Mac OS X on G3 computers" lawsuit. I qualify for this settlement because I own an original Blueberry iBook (300Mhz G3), and at first I thought "Hey, Free money!". But then I realized that I was happy with the way my iBook was performing with OS X. It has become more useful then ever with OS X.
Now, I wouldn't run Photoshop or Final Cut Pro on the thing. Nor would I watch any DVD's (because it only has a CD-ROM), however I believe Apple has done an excellent job making it run well on older machines. I think it runs better than it should. It's the most current operating system on a 5-year-old machine, and it runs great. I would like to see Windows do that. In fact, I have a challenge for anyone willing to take me up. My 300 Mhz G3 ibook (192MB Ram, 10 GB HD, CDROM, OS X 10.3.3) Vs. a similar Wintel machine running a standard version of Windows XP.
All this settlement is going to do is cause Apple to drop support for older G3 machines. Which it already has had to do in Panther (by dropping all non-USB Mac support). Jaguar runs great on my Moms old Wallstreet Powerbook (266Mhz G3), and I think Panther would run good too if I could install it.
So I am calling out to all Mac heads, and asking you to protest this settlement. How, you ask? By sending a letter of protest back to the settlement claims department. If you have the claim form, I would encourage you to use the envelope provided with it. Here is a copy of the letter I sent and you can download a copy of the letter to send yourself in several formats below:

I too run OS X 10.3.3 on a blueberry iBook 300Mhz, but I only have 160Mb of RAM. It serves it's purpose of surfing porn sites from the bathroom.

right on I installed 10.3 on a G3 Blueberry iMac and the person who I did it for said that that machine is running better and they are doing more on that machine than ever before. Which proves one thing Apple should of never let Sears sell iMacs and iBooks.

Right on! Stick it to the man! They can't get away with this! We've got to stand up for what's right and get people to not stand up for what's right! Er... no wait.... this is confusing... :-
I'm gonna go talk to Cosmic Stan, he'll help me make sense of this...

I have the PowerBook G3 Pismo (Firewire, 2000, what have you). It was given to me by the original owner, will he receive one of these letters?
I'm with you, installing Panther was the best thing anyone could have done for this laptop, runs great. The people who started the law suit are just stupid pricks.

Pismo Man: Register your machine at http://register.apple.com so that they'll send YOU the letters and stuff. I just got an iBook 600 (late 2001) that looks & runs like new and registered it online yesterday. Go for it.

In the letter sent by the law firm, it states that the refund offer is only valid for any version of Mac OS X purchased BEFORE May 2003, which is way before the release of Panther. Many of the past posters claim that Panther did wonders for their aging Macs, but it is clearly not listed as a valid version for refund, because the law firm realizes that it would be unfair to hold Apple accountable for GOOD software. So, to be eligible for refund, how would my old Lombard run any better with Panther when it wasn't even released then?
Jaguar was a step in the right direction, but it was still slow on a 333MHz G3 PowerBook.
Now, I am willing to defend Apple for almost anything "wrong" they have done, as long as their actions were justifiable. But I chose to accept my refund, as part of the settlement. I was one of the first to purchase Mac OS X version 10.0. Slow is an overstatement when I ran it on my Lombard PowerBook, and I do believe that I am entitled to a refund, when 10.0 was obviously still not ready for mass consumption.

Instead of studying for finals, what about just going to the Bahamas and catching some rays? Maybe you'll flunk, but you might have flunked anyway; that's my point.
