Let's go iPod Crazy |
|
Well, it seems as though no one's doing a review of the new iPod(s) here at 2guys, so I figure I will.
I went and spent some time with one at the local Apple Store. I picked it, clicked it, licked it, poked it, choked it, stroked it, provoked it...
...aaaaand i'm outta rhymes.
But yea, I messed with it for a while, and here's what I found....
--- THE IPOD PHOTO ---
Admit it, we all *want* it to be cool. And we want to want one. We want with all our wanting might.
So I got to the ever-shiny Apple Store, and saw the iPod Photo. I was really excited, I'd only seen them on apple.com before this.
I picked it up, and saw it was in full color. Not choppy color like my phone, or one of those (barf) "Pocket PCs," it was rounded, bubbly, pretty color like those on macs. It's like holding a tiny little mac in your hand, kind of. And EVERYTHING was in color. It'd be nice to have a customizable color scheme, though....
The photo quality is nothing short of stunning. They had some pre-loaded images already there of some dog, and you could see every last flea.
The interface is very mac-like; easy to use, but takes some getting used to. You can view slideshows with cool transitiony thingies right on the screen, and view batches of photos like in iPhoto.
Yes, it's very cool. And I *want* to want one.
But I don't want one.
Although it's unarguably awesome, it has some major downsides not made obvious by the online photos.
The first, and most important, is the price.
It's $499 for the 40gig, and $599 for the 60gig. That's just too much, in my opinon.
Let's say I, the typical american teenageer, take a job as a bag boy a the local kwik-e-mart working for 4 hours on the weekends (that's the most a 14 year old can work in Virgina) making minimum wage ($5.15 an hour). That means I'd make $41.20 a week. I'd have to work around 12 weeks (3 months) for a 40gig iPod, and 14 weeks (a little more than 3 months) for a 60gig. That's 1/4th of a year.
Let's also say that i'll live 100 years. That's 3/1400ths of of my life i've spent working for an iPod.
Sure, it's an awesome thing to have, but it's just too expensive right now. $299 was fair. $399 was pushin' it a little. But $599? Unless you're a bizillionaire, you're gonna think twice before getting one of these.
The other major downside was it's size. To me and my little 15gig 3gen iPod, it's downright gargantuan.
The 40 gig is pretty much the same as the old 40s, but the 60gig is noticeably huge. Yea, it's small for what it is, but it's just too large for me. It almost rivals the size of the 1st and 2nd gen iPods.
It's about as thick as a fat guy's thumb. If you're a fat guy, look at your thumb, and that's how thick it is. If you're not a fat guy, go find Steve Ballmer and look at his thumb.
Also, I hate the click wheel. You and Steve Jobs might love it, but I hate it. That's pretty much the only reason I don't have a 4th gen iPod. The click wheel has mechanical buttons!!! Mechanical buttons that click!!! The 3rd gen was cool cuz it had all touch-sensors. Boo to the click wheel.
But anyway, the color screen and photo viewer is still pretty awesome, as long as you don't mind a thicker iPod and emptying your kid's college account, so I give it 4 out of 5 pants.
--- IPOD U2 SPECIAL EDITION ---
It's red and black. Puuurdy.
So those are the new iPods. Win a poker tournament and get one; otherwise, it's off to spend 3/1400ths of my life at Safeway....

I was a little surprised at the 60 Gig price point myself ($599). For $999 you can get a whole iBook. Remember that the original 40 gig, when it came out, was also $499 and they didn't have any trouble selling them. I don't think they are going to have trouble selling at $599 either, and the reason is storage. There are plenty of people out there who will fork over for hte storage. I have close to 15,000 tracks in my music library. A fair number of these are audio books. I cannot even come close to syncing my entire library. I don't think I would make it with 60 either, it would be close. I would love to have the storage, but I am going to wait a bit. See what happens. The photo features are cool, but I can wait for them.

You can work in my sweat-shop for $0.27 a day... plus all the whipping you can take... No? Ok, I'll find someone else to make my custom made, single use shoes.

When you find some one to make your shoes let me know. I will need to put an order in for a pair of size 15's and they better be comfy or I will not pay.
