iTunes Updates to 4.0.1 |
|
Slackin noticed you can get iTunes 4.0.1 via Software Update. Before you go hog wild though, there is a caveat. (Mmmm...caveat. No wait - that's caviar)
The update seems to include the usual bug fixes, but as the description states, it also "only allows music sharing between computers using iTunes 4.0.1 or later on a local network (in the same subnet)."
In other words, Apple seems to have crippled the software so that you can't share your music library over the Internet. We haven't installed it to make absolutely certain this is the case, but it sure sounds like it.
If so, this is a really big deal for a lot of people, including the RIAA. Perhaps Apple was strongarmed by the music labels? It's a known fact that iTunes streams can be ripped into .mp3 format, but isn't the ability to stream your music over the Internet part of what you can expressly do with the music you buy from the iTunes Music Store? Ok, it may not be expressly stated, but it IS implied. Ok, maybe it's not even implied, but it IS a cool feature.
Anyhow, this may all be much ado about nuthin'. Let us know if you try the iTunes update and you are indeed stopped from sharing over the 'net. |
