 New Mac at Macworld Expo?
Here's something cool to hope for at MacWorld Expo '03 in San Fran next week. The MoodMac. Ok, maybe not a good name, but imagine a computer that YOU can control the color of. Or a computer that, when you goof up and cause an error, changes to bright red. Or perhaps when you're working diligently, it pulsates different soothing hues of blue.

It may be a little early for it to be released at MacWorld, but there is some proof of a Mac like this in the works at Cupertino. As a few sites reported on Monday, including MacDailyNews, Apple has filed a patent for an invention pertaining to "electronic devices capable of changing their ornamental or decorative appearance". This patent includes info on an illuminable housing that permits passage of light. Item 7 of the patent even states that the diodes will emit diferent colors of light.

Some other reasons to believe that this will happen at some point: Apple already has the transparent plastic technology from previous iMac models. It would give Macintosh computers slightly human qualities, which fits right in with Apple's past philosophies (think Happy Mac!). It would also give the consumer a lot of color options without Apple having to go thru the problems of creating the different shades of plastics and assembling them. You have one product Apple would be making. This would save Apple some cash, as well as some shipping and retail headaches by having different numbered models for each color.

But the number one reason is the reason most things are done at Apple - because this is something the Great Steve would want (That's Steve Jobs, for those who aren't that hip to the lingo used by Those That Follow Steve). Steve has always been about the aesthetics of computers - making them user-friendly and unobtrusive (no fans and such), as well as works of art.

Here's one last bit pulled from the patent that enforces this whole premise:

"Although displays, speakers and indicators work well, they are limited to the type of feedback they give a user. For example, while playing a movie with a DVD drive of a computing device, the display screen only outputs the video associated with the movie, the speaker only outputs the audio associated with the movie, and the indicator only indicates that a movie is playing the DVD drive. Thus, it would be desirable to provide additional feedback to a user."

Hopefully we see this implemented soon!

 Deep Thoughts
I often wonder if our soul purpose in life is spelled out for us and we are sometimes too blind to see it. Can a person be content doing something other than what they may have been meant to do? While driving my car, I saw a sign in front of a family dentistry that read "Dr. Butts, D.D.S.", and I knew everything was going to be ok. He was meant for proctology, I'm certain, but dentistry suited his needs just the same.
