Merry Mac Music Musings |
|
On Saturday, my wonderful girlfriend and I went on a voyage to the Apple Store in Columbus, OH to pick up our new bundles of joy - namely, 15 GB iPods! I should also mention that my credit card was declined and Slackin was nice enough to put my iPod on her card. Now I have to work it off, if ya know what I mean (nudge nudge, wink wink). And...um...by working it off I mean actually paying her back the 400 bucks...
Anyway, back to the topic at hand!
The new iPods are fabulous things. I had never really used one for more than a minute or so, and I am just in awe of it. It's still amazing that 15 GB can fit in such a small space! And the uses for it are incredible. For instance, I have an iRock FM transmitter that I hook into the sucker when I'm driving, so I have quick access to my entire music library (over 2200 songs)! As I rarely like to listen to the radio, this is the proverbial "shiznit".
Now, the iPod is a little funky once in a while and freezes up, but after a quick "reboot" it works fine. Hopefully Apple will address this with a software/firmware update soon.
I didn't want this to be a full-on review of the iPod, so I'll move on to the next topic, but not before I suggest that everyone out there who's thinking about buying an iPod....do it! You only live once and, hey - you don't have to pay those credit cards right away!
And speaking of spending money you don't have, I've been trying to buy songs from the Music Store and I still am not able to. The entire saga is told in this article (along with an excellent story about a sock), but the gist is that Music Store can't charge my credit card for a song I had already bought (and downloaded).
Apparently it's a known issue, and I'm not the only one it affects. I've emailed Apple about it again, and I'll keep you posted on if/when this gets fixed.
So, being unable to legally purchase music, I had to take the low road (Steve forgive me, I had no other choice!). I stumbled across an app called iLeech. iLeech lets you connect to shared music on iTunes 4 clients, which in and of itself is no big whoop, but it actually lets you DOWNLOAD songs from those iTunes clients!
That's right - illegal downloadin' galore. The iLeech/iTunes 4 combo could be better than Napster in it's heyday. That is, if there were Windows versions of them. I suppose that's just one more reason to switch to the Mac...at least until Apple's lawyer's (or perhaps the RIAA's) put the kibosh on iLeech.
Now, one last thing...
(Wow, I felt like Steve Jobs for a moment there. Seriously though, he hasn't done that "One last thing" for a few years now. Was it too tired and cliched? Will he ever revive the big surprise at the end of a keynote? Will mesh tank tops ever be cool again? I suppose we may never know...)
No one likes it when you own the newest model of something from Apple and then something newer is released. It's inevitable, but still disheartening. The value drops, the product is not as new or cool anymore, and everyone points and laughs at you.
So yesterday when I saw info on iPodlounge about an iPod with a blue backlight, my ire rose. On the page, an Apple Store employee was talking about an iPod that had a much clearer screen than other models. My blood bubbled. The anonymous employee said that it could be Apple's promised "new high resolution" screen. I turned into the Hulk and demolished my place of work in a furious rampage of destruction! (Don't worry, I spared the Macs and most of the Mac users)
Today however, upon visiting the same page, I find out that it's not a new model of iPod and I didn't get screwed. It's just that iPod LED's can be calibrated slightly differently, or the color of the screen may have to do with the manufacturer or the temperature of the unit.
So, needless to say I feel pretty ashamed for all the smashing I did. And man, I have a lot to clean up.

ILeech is extremely bad for Apple, and is the reason why Spymac took their music section offline.

I agree about iLeech being bad, the streamling playlist is a great feature, and if this sort of thing prevails, Apple will have to take that feature out of the next version... [He says as he downloads music from limewire.]

Whew...where was I?
I hope Apple doesn't have to shut down the streaming feature of iTunes4. And I STILL can't purchase from the Muic Store. :(

Too bad there's not such a thing as a golden skunk, because you'd probably be proud to be sprayed by one.
