Finally, I'm A Mac Owner! |
|
It all started Friday when the goobers of UPS left my G3 PowerBook sitting on my front porch because I was not home. Thank God I have decent neighbors that didn't steal it. I opened it up and started playing with all of the buttons and switches - Yippie! I tried installing Yellow Dog Linux (yes I am a freak), and it didn't work! *SCREAM* So I did some research, and all Macs made before the iMac have special installation instructions - Geesh!
First problem, I needed to partition my hard drive and install OS 9.2, but it didn't come with an OS installation CD. Thank goodness Jonahan was nice enough to loan me a copy Monday morning. So with a freshly partitioned hard drive and a minimal install of OS 9.2, I started the journey (again) of installing YDL.
After the (fairly interesting) process of installing BootX, the boot menu program for older Macs, I rebooted and tried installing YDL. And of course, I got a kernel panic. So I rebooted, and tried once more... Anaconda, the installation interface, came up. The biggest problem so far, it was unable to detect my "monitor type" and the installer is running in 640X480.
After the installer finished I found myself with a 640x480 resolution that I could not find a way to change. Don't get me wrong, I found where to change it, it is just not working. So after a little research, I found myself editing /etc/X11/XF86Config as per this article, and I am happy to say that I am currently running at 1024x768 with millions of colors.
With that done and out of the way, I took the time to install the "gnome-games" package (after fighting with the ROM dependencies), and then using apt-get to update all of the packages. It is running very well, and I am getting decent battery life.
I will be posting a review of YDL in the very near future, but first I will tackle my next challenge, going wireless. Wish me luck! |

Congrats on your first mac. I'm not so sure anymore if mine was a good buy. It takes forever to load diablo 2 and it wont install the expansion pack cause it can't find the intsall thing or whatever.

Even though he was an enemy of mine, I had to admit that what he had accomplished was a brilliant piece of strategy. First, he punched me, then he kicked me, then he punched me again.
