I Stole a Customer Away from Dell
A customer came into my small computer store in ohio and was looking for a low cost laptop. At my store we basically sell windows based systems that are both new and used. We don't sell apple computers, mainly because the owner doesn't want to (as much as i try to get him to he won't budge). Well this guy was looking to spend about $1000 bucks on a laptop and after looking at our Pentium 2 laptops he decided that he needed something with more power.

This customer then started to sing the same "I can get a better laptop from Dell for $999.99 that comes with this and that..." bla bla bla. At this point I knew that I lost any chance to sell him anything that we carry in our store. So I said "well if your looking for an inexpensive computer, then check this out". I whipped out my iBook and proceeded to show him all the features that come standard with apple computers. He said that he has started to see more of apple computers and that the reviews of them are great, but he didn't know that they sold laptop's for $1000.

As he looked at the iLife programs, Sherlock, and Apple Works he asked me how much extra do these programs cost? I told him that they come standard on all of apple's computers and that there wasn't any additional cost. He loved the idea he didn't have to print everything out as he could transform them to PDF files and view them later. He also loved Sherlock yellow pages, with the map feature and driving directions. A quote from him about those features: "Awesome feature especially when I drive a truck, and it's cool that I don't have to print out everything, I can just save it to PDF". He asked if Windows XP has that feature, and of course the response was no.

He asked if these laptop's can be upgraded, and of course I ripped open the keyboard like a mad man .. ok i gently pulled the latches and popped off the keyboard.. and showed him where he could add up to 512mb of ram to the laptop.

Well after this barrage of features and upgradeability chat he wanted to know where he could get one... Unfortunately we don't sell Apple products at my store. He asked if there was a place in Columbus Ohio that sold Apple Computers, so I printed out directions to the Apple Store in Easton (Columbus, Ohio Apple Store). He is going to head there and buy his first Apple. He even promised me he'll bring it in to show me. So as the story has an happy ending, and my boss has flames coming out of his head because I'm selling Apple products instead of his... but all is still well.

Help me.

-It's 4 AM here and I didn't know where else to go for help. I figured this would be a place where I could find people knowledgable on the topic.
a friend sent me a file saying it was the Gold version of OS10.3 and me being stupid installed it. After about 3 hours of installation, nothing happenned. So I restarted. When it loaded back up my mouse wasn't working. I went into system prefs. after figuring out how to sort of navigate windows witht the keyboard, but withouut the mouse I couldn't select anything. So I then tried to install my original OSX CD in there and reinstall the OS. I opened the drive and inserted the CD. When I closed the drive it didn't detect anything. And worse yet, the drive wouldn't open again. My life is on that computer. I need help.

By the way, it is a 700mhz iBook with 256 MB RAM if that helps.

Please help, and sorry for making an off topic ocmment like this.

jeez some friend.

rlhamon 10/11/03, 10:37 AM EDT
back up a second first things first do you back up your files?
if you did the easiest thing to do is to wipe the drive clean and reinstall os 10.2
if not then we would have to look at this situation in a different matter

Pav 10/11/03, 11:00 AM EDT
Everything is eaasily replacable except for 3 essays. I might be able to copy them and send to to my roommate throughiChat. It'll be tough with a keyboard, but I think I can figure it out. How do I wipe the hardDrive?

rlhamon 10/11/03, 12:06 PM EDT
ok well as long as you can back up your data where in business.
locate the restore disk and then place the disk into the cd-rom drive. power off the laptop and then power on the laptop with the cd-rom in the drive. to wipe the drive clean drag you hard drive to the trash and then empty the trash. After you finished that click the Cd-rom and install os 10.2 back on to the machine

rlhamon 10/11/03, 12:11 PM EDT
also i did notice if you did have a native version of OS 10.2 then you just run the cd on boot up and follow direction don't repartition just reinstall the software

Pav 10/11/03, 2:37 PM EDT
Well, with the mouse not working I couldn't really drag and drop the HD into the trash. But I booted from the CD and wiped it from there. Thanks for your help guys.

P.S. I switched to the Mac because I was on the phone with a guy at Dell ordering a laptop for college and he said: "Yeah, Apples are better, but they cost so much more." So I listened to him and ordered the machine. But it turned out that a lot of their "discounts" and "special orders" weren't valid for some reason or another, and then they gave me some jive about 128MB extra RAM costing me $300 extra. Dells may be cheaper, but at least Apple doesn't lie to you to make you buy their products.

rlhamon 10/11/03, 2:57 PM EDT
well im glad that you got your system working again and that you didn't fall for the dell bs.
also if people at one company feels that a computer is better than there's but cost more money you should tell them that i'll spend the extra money and get the better computer.
also watch out with the beta's it can be a scary world.lol

Serpico 10/12/03, 3:27 PM EDT
Sweet.
My wife is a pc user and a couple of friends have gone out now and bought new imacs. We went over to one of their homes to create an iMovie using pictures and music. I never used it before and learned it at the same time as my wife and her friend. After a few hours we had alot of fun, no pulling hair or angry words and a finished movie. Now my wife is thinking about taking my iBook when I upgrade to a G5. PC users just need to be shown how macs work and the iapps. If they knew how much stuff is included in the price, they wouldn't gawk. They are coming from a background where pc's are cheap but software is free and illegal. Apple and mac users need to change that thought in their heads. Good luck to all guys!

rlhamon 10/12/03, 11:51 PM EDT
By your comments I see that your knowledge of computer's are one limited and two you have no idea about computers sales. It's eazy to tell that the customer was looking for a QVC dell that he seen on TV the night before. If you read the article you would see that he was looking directly for a new dell.
Now with that said you would know that dell will not sell new laptops to retail stores. No change they take that risk to allow someone to see what a piece of crap product they sell for 999.99 trust me i fix them every day.
Also i showed him the mac to prove that dell doesn't sell the best laptop( and that the PII that he riped apart was a dead deal period ) so when he seen that I didn't expect him to instantly want a mac ( i can't blame him ) and that the product that I was selling didn't fit his needs and the mac was so I was still helping the customer so by helping the customer I still was doing my job.
Also why don't we sell mac's well a little hint .... Apple Store! yes it's a retail store also.

rlhamon 10/13/03, 12:16 PM EDT
I'll tell you what .... you use the 2.0 celeron that is 100.00 and a 2" monitor bigger and i'll use my ibook 700 12" monitor and we'll compete on a performance based tests. If by chance your Dell would beat my ibook I'll take my ibook into the middle of the street and smash it into thousands of pieces and then call Dell and buy one of those Celeron machines.
But if your Celeron system would loose you would need to smash the laptop into thousands of pieces and then swear to never ever post in the Mac forum.
When your ready to take that challenge let me know.

rlhamon 10/13/03, 2:17 PM EDT
Also one last addition to your humiliation have you asked yourself why don't windows users have websites like this?
well to answer your question is simple.
your too busy downloading security patches and fighting viruses instead of relaxing and talking about things that you like. example mac's.
I know you'll give some type of non-educated response because history has shown us that you will. but please don't i really hate wasting my time proving your ignorance ..... when it's obvious your choice of computer shows that!

Jonathan 10/13/03, 2:46 PM EDT

JACK 10/13/03, 6:04 PM EDT
hey hey don't be hatin why are you so pissed about a mac site anyways your the mainstream so why are you wasting your pathetic time trying to diss on people on an internet forum? At least i actually gain something out of this (news, socializing, etc)...

by the way, hardware doesn't mean much to me, i'm not a big photoshopper or bryce user or whatever (though i do make alot of iMovies), i buy computers for the OS, and right now apple Owns in the OS department, and they're coming out with Panther in less than two weeks. Whens your next update? last i heard, longhorn wasn't officially comin out till 2006. now THATS pathetic.

JACK 10/13/03, 6:05 PM EDT
also, this website has some hilarious stuff. props to the owners for an excellent website.

Mac Maniac 10/15/03, 3:34 PM EDT
This is a very interesting and entertaining forum, and I will be back for more. To Max sux or whatever your variable handle is right now....wrong on nearly every count! I am an Apple-Cerified Mac tech and have also been using PCs since the IBM PCjr. Recently, a VW mechanic I know dropped off an IBM Venus Pentium Pro that he found in the back of an abandoned car. Plugged it in and it worked, he said to keep it. Put a K7 logic board and a 1GHz Athlon, installed XP Pro, and have been using it for several days. WHAT A F*%&* JOKE!! OK, this is not a new system, but this machine, with 192MB of RAM, is about as fast as a Mac 7300/200. This is a 2001-era processor, compared to a 1998 model mac at 1/5th the cpu horsepower. But a 7300 wouldn't run OS X, you may protest...and the PC runs the latest and greatest (pathetic POS wannabe) OS from microsoft.
With a little help from XPostFacto, a less than 1MB system patch, the 7300 will run 10.1.5 with nearly any stock configuration. With the CPU upgraded to a G3 or G4, it will run Jaguar, just like my UMAX S900 Mac clone does. And then there is NO competition between any of these mid-90s era Macs (with upgraded CPUs) and PCs under 2GHz, new right out of the box. The machine is faster, and the action is faster....you can simply do more, faster and easier, on the Mac OS, even OS X.
Well, now I know why I never post on these things...I don't know when to shut up. Thanks for your time!
FIGHT TERRORISM AT HOME AND ABROAD: REMOVE non-PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH FROM OFFICE. SUPPORT THE TROOPS, NOT KING GEORGE!

Uh, mac forum, not a political rant page

Jonahan 10/17/03, 10:53 PM EDT
True, it's not a political rant page, but still, very nice comment, Mac Maniac :)

Aitrus 12/26/03, 12:35 PM EDT
First off, Kudos to rlhamon: Thanks for doing it right - I'm a PC user, and I've always been one. My experience with macs is pretty limited, but I'm doing my best to stay pretty open-minded about mac systems, however - I've been turned off by the mac because most mac enthusiasts I meet seem snobbish and rather than spend their time being kind and SHOWING people WHY they love their mac, they prefer to waste it windows-user bashing. Nobody likes to be told that they are an idiot for using an OS that is the mainstream - You have to admit - M$ has the market share right now - and they have had it for quite some time now, and while competitors like Apple and Linux have been catching up, there's still a big chunk of the pie that M$ is holding on to.

I just wanted to applaud you for your smart, considerate and pleasantly cool introduction of a mac system to a pc user. Let's hope others realize this and SHOW pc users how easy the mac is to use rather than drone endlessly about how M$ products - and their users are inferior - that just promotes hate, and who needs that?
