Data CD Option in iTunes 4.1
Being the Software Update lemming I am, I installed iTunes 4.1 as soon as I saw it Thursday. Which, incidentally, I wasn't even at home when I did it. I ran Software Update remotely via ssh and Terminal from rlhamon's house, but I digress. When I got home, I went through iTunes thoroughly to see what was new, and one of the things I found was under the burning section, there is a new option: Data CD. It took me a second to realize the significance of this feature, but it turns out it can be really cool.

Think back to when the iTunes Music Store first came out. Remember all the reports about how if you erase your hard drive, all the songs were gone forever, and a little alien robot would come down and steal that rivet out of the side of your jeans! Or how about that story of the guy who claimed as soon as he crossed international boarders, in to the far-away land known as Canada, all his purchased songs instantly disappeared! Instilling fear in the hearts of all international travelers who purchase songs from the iTMS.

Well, it turns out that no alien robots come down to steal the rivet, and you can easily back up the songs you purchased about 700 million different ways. And the guy who went to Canada only to find all his songs had magically disappeared? Turns out he bought the songs while living in the US, then moved to Canada. Lived there for awhile, and THEN for some reason erased everything on his Mac, and reinstalled it. But this time entered his new Canadian address instead of his US address, and since the Music Store isn't legal outside the US yet, couldn't set up the Music Store and couldn't play his files.

But this new Data CD option is great for that problem. You can now back up playlists to CD or DVD, including all your purchased music. So if your hard drive takes a dump, or you move to Canada, you can have a backed up copy of your purchased music. (Not much use if you move to Canada, but Jobs said that the iTMS would be coming outside the US soon, allowing you to play it then)

Now, this option isn't real useful for people like me to back up all our songs: only a CD burner, and 8 GB of music. Because at 700MB a CD, it would take 12 CD's to back up all my music. But for someone with a Superdrive, 8 GB of music would fit on only 2 DVD's. So all in all, this is an option that will be very useful for some people, and one that others will never use.

The moral of this story? Don't move to Canada, kids.

I have a question... kinda off topic, but does anybody know how to remotely deauthorize a computer? cause somebody STOLE my old computer with all my purchased songs (fortunately i backed them up on my iPod). Instead of gettting a nice new computer, i get a 600 iBook handme down (dammit). But now i am only able to authorize it on two computers cause whoever has my other computer is still authorized...

JACK, Apple can de-auth that computer for you. They'll ask you some questions and make you feel really bad about letting someone steal your computer with all those songs on it, cuz, you know, music sharing is bad, but they can reset your entry in their database. I think you'll have to re-add the computers you want to authorize tho.

My iBook had to be sent in to be worked on (I think it got a new motherboard - not sure tho) and it came back and it wasn't authorized to play my music. I told Apple about this and they scolded me even tho I hadn't done anyhting wrong. ;)
