Review: Airfoil |
|
I love my Airport Express, I use it all the time. In fact, when I am sitting at my computer in my bedroom listening to iTunes, I normally listen to it over the stereo in the living room just because it sounds better then the tiny little speakers on my PowerBook, even though it is on the other side of the wall. The only problem with the Airport Express is it only plays audio from iTunes.
That has always been a bummer for me, because I host a lot of parties, and ever since I downloaded my first MP3 I've had my computer hooked to my home stereo, with a long headphone cable, for use during said parties. But I didn't just play music over the stereo, I would use text to speech to type insults to my friends, and play other funny audio from movies and what not over the stereo as well. Ever since I got my airport express, I haven't been able to do that.
Until now that is, because Rogue Amoeba has come to the rescue with a software program called "Airfoil" a program that takes audio from any application and plays it through your |

Airport Express. Any application, including Text Edit. So now when I want to call my friend an "ass jacket" and question his sexuality, I can fire up Text Edit and have the computer insult him for me!
This program works great, and would be worth the $25 to register it, but only if you have a need for it (like insulting your friends). It isn't perfect. For instance, in order to slip an insult in between songs, I have to pause iTunes, and then click transmit on the Airfoil window before it will start speaking what I have in Text Edit, meaning there is several seconds of dead air, which can quickly turn a "funny well timed joke", in to that awkward silence you get when you call your best friend a "fart sniffing dingleberry" out of context. Also don't expect to watch any video files with the audio streaming over Airfoil. There is a lag of around a second from the time it plays on your computer and the time it plays over the stereo.
But all in all this is a great program. So far I haven't found any application it couldn't stream audio over my AirPort Express, and installation and setup was a breeze. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a need to stream audio from something other than iTunes over an AirPort Express, and for the right person the $25 registration fee is a bargain.
I give Airfoil 4 out of 5 pants.

I downloaded it right after it came out and I like it too. I don't think there will ever be a way to get over the lag because of the way Apple has designed the Airport Express. Essentially, the stream is transocded to Apple Lossless to send over the air. That takes time and processor power.

Great software, works well. BUT, beware of the company. I purchased an unlock / registration code from them on 1st April 2005 and, well, it's now 15th April 2005 and I'm still waiting for that code - no response from the company whatsoever after payment made.

i tried it out... as long as there is no visual that goes with the audio it works great. The lag was too painful for me.

I'd like to see a nude opera, because when they hit those high notes, I bet you can really see it in those genitals.
