 Apple's Faulty Logic
Last week, a report over at AppleInsider told of how a bunch of dissatisfied iBook owners are trying to organize a class-action lawsuit against Apple stemming from a wide-spread logic board issue in Apple's iBooks. Some people have had to send their iBooks back in for repairs up to four times for the same issue.

The problem, apparently affecting dual-USB iBooks (700Mhz and up), is cited by many people on this guy's site and Apple's own discussion boards. From looking at the discussion boards, it seems that Apple is fixing this problem quickly, but obviously the recurring nature of it is what's really getting people pissed off.

On top of that, AppleInsider is now telling us that Apple seems to be removing posts regarding this problem from it's discussion boards. An AI reader had a post deleted that "contained no profanity of foul language, but simply presented an account of his current situation" and on top of that, "Followup postings on subject were also removed 'within a matter of minutes'".

Could that be? Could the company we have such a huge love/hate relationship with possibly be resorting to Microsoftian tactics to make this iBook logic board issue look like a non-issue? Well, they have done it before. As AppleInsider says, "In 2002 the company began removing posts from disgruntled iTools users and proceeded with the same behavior earlier this year on the subject of defective Apple power cords." Plus, remember that a while back, Apple tried to downplay the fact that OS X didn't run so great on Macs with older G3's, before they were sued and eventually reached a settlement where they agreed to give some refunds.

Whether Apple is trying to muddy the waters or not, it seems that they are taking care of the issue with their ususal quality of service and great return time. I actually can speak of the logic board issue first-hand. Back in July, I posted of the problem I had with my iBook, and although I was never told that the problem was the logic board (and stupidly, never asked), all the symptoms pointed to it. If any bit of pressure was put on the bottom of the laptop, it froze up and got weird horizontal lines all over the screen. Which sounds like other people's experiences: "garbage all over the screen followed by what looked to all intensive purposes like a pixelated equivalent of purple and black mould growing from the screen edges towards the center" [sic]. But Apple fixed it and I haven't had any problems since (knocks on some wood). It even feels slightly heavier and sturdier, as if it were reinforced with something (could be a steel plate, could be graham crackers - I'm hoping it's the latter).

Anyhow, let's hope that Apple has fixed this problem for the new crop of G4 iBooks and that they continue to fix the problem for owners of the faulty G3 iBooks. As for the posts being deleted, I'm sure you'd all agree that the the only logical conclusion we can come to is that some sort of post-eating virus is running amok at Apple. Hey ... the first virus for OS X! Now we can finally be accepted among our Windows-using brethren! HOORAY!!!

I had this problem back in the early summer and turned it in for repair. Have not had a problem since with the exception of marginal battery life since the late 10.2x updates and Panther. iBook G3 800/AirPort/640MB.

My iBook 800 has just been sent away for repair for the fourth time since January for this problem.

ZingZing 12/16/03, 11:50 AM EDT
Your second to last paragraph, beginning with "Whether Apple ..." has some problems. First, the phrase is "for all intents and purposes", not "to all intensive purposes". And second, in the last sentence you indicate that you hope that Apple reinforced your iBook with Graham crackers. Is this really what you mean, or maybe you should you have used the word "former" instead of "latter"?

Graham crackers are good as S'mores, but not in iBook cases.

Good site, though.

Sniff ... Sniff .... hey ZingZing smell that? I think I smell.... Yes.... Yes I smell it...its ...its .. its Sarcasm!

rlhamon 12/16/03, 12:51 PM EDT
I bought my iBook about spring time and I would agree my iBook is heaver than other dual usb iBooks that was purchased before April. So it's possible that their was a flaw and Apple has fixed it and well Apple maybe waiting and seeing what happens to the ones that had the flaw. Also you never know what these people was saying on the message boards and Apple could of easily felt that Trolls had taken over because we all seen what Trolls can do.

Jonahan 12/16/03, 1:12 PM EDT
Good point rlhamon :)

ZingZing: The "for all intensive" thing was where I had quoted someone. I put the ole [sic] thing around it. Not sure what exactly what [sic] means, but I thought it was something like "spelling intentionally left incorrect, or in original form". And yes, I do hope my iBook is reinforced with Graham Crackers. Double-ply preferably.

sweetjimmyhugs 12/16/03, 3:35 PM EDT
mmmm... an iBook with a crunchy Graham cracker crust and a whipped topping from iWhippedtop.com. Sweet.

here is a meaning of [sic] from Reinvented.net
Date: ca. 1859 : intentionally so written; used after a printed word or passage to indicate that it is intended exactly as printed or to indicate that it exactly reproduces an original (~said he seed [sic] it all)

Ahhh. Everytime I see sweetjimmyhugs on the site I get a rap song in my head:
(singing really fast)sweetjimmyhugs(stop singing really fast) bounce wit it. Bum bum bum bum bum

sweetjimmyhugs 12/16/03, 9:59 PM EDT
Why?

stickman67 12/16/03, 10:08 PM EDT
Further to the erudite post by sweetjimmyhugs:

"sic" is the Latin word meaning "so" or "thus".

And what a darling little word it is.

However, from the standpoint of an editor (that's me) it's a word best used with caution (and the erudite Jonahan uses it in exemplary fashion -- damn, why is my tongue all brown?). While "sic" is useful to point out that egregious errors, archaic spellings, and so on, in quoted material are the work of the original author of that material, sometimes it can seem merely pretentious, precious or sarcastic, and should be avoided.

OK, you can all go back to work now. Thank you.

This problem has not gone away! My Ibook has been in repair for 2 weeks now because it keeps going in and out of Repair/hold. It seem they have installed new logic boards and even the new ones are defective!!!! This is not what I expected from Apple!
The sad thing is I am now forced to use a PC :(

HTML Samurai 12/17/03, 4:24 PM EDT
You poor fellow you!

It's running Linux though, isn't it? Not Windows, anything but Windows!

HTML Samurai 12/17/03, 4:28 PM EDT
Sorry, I'm better now...

Giaguara 12/20/03, 7:59 PM EDT
i had an ibook that had the logic board issue. after 1 month of use. they fixed it, and it worked fine. 12", 700 mhz .. i sold it, now i've a 12" pb

huh 12/26/03, 5:47 AM EDT
Listen when the issue has been discussed a thousand times why would you want it on the boards. After a few thousand times combined with Apple fixing the problem it just becomes whining. My hard drive just failed in my PowerBook a month after its warranty was up. It hurts but those are the breaks, I don't go to the boards and whine.
