 Fanatacism Has Its Downfalls
Macs rule. It's as simple as that. The hardware and Operating System are as beautiful as they are powerful, and anyone who has used a Mac for any length of time will tell you that. For anyone who wants to just get stuff done on a computer - simply put: get a Mac.

OS X "gets out of your way", allowing you to do what needs to be done, instead of being all up in your face like Windows (yes, even XP). Things are more intuitive, the OS has an interwoven thread of simplicity thoughout it, and yet it's very elegant and has lots of eye candy. For all these reasons and many, many more, I recommend that everyone almost everyone should own a Mac.

Notice I said almost. Weird to hear from a fanatical Mac user? Well, maybe, but let me explain myself.

I don't think anyone should be a blind follower of Apple. We should be well-rounded and know where Apple's downfalls are. It'll make us that much better as computer users and as Mac Evangelists.

Apple is a company like any other. Well ok, maybe not exactly like any other, but still a company that isn't infallible and always has room for improvement. We criticize Apple fairly frequently on this site, and we also happily applaud them when they succeed.

We also can't afford to be elitists about our preferred platform. Nor can we ignorantly put down PC users (although I think we can intelligently take shots at their preferred OS/hardware). If we start doing that, we're just like them. A month ago, Jonathan (a contributer to 2 guys and my Nephew) wrote an article that sparked a lot of interest. It also ignited somewhat of a flame-war; and a lot of blind, hurtful shots were taken by both sides (and I'm not innocent either). We were bashing Windows pretty good, but a lot of people offered real-word experiences that said WHY (as the title of the article said) Windows PC's suck. I think what we did there was acceptable, although admittedly, the title could have been changed to something less offensive to someone who actually liked Windows. I know, maybe I'm being a bit touchy-feely today...but imagine how you would react if someone wrote an article on a PC site titled "Mac OS X Sucks". You might be a little stung, try to retaliate, and flames would erupt. Sure, you might try to ignore it, but you would probably still be pissed at that site. (I can't imagine anyone being able to offer facts as to why Mac OS X actually sucks, but if you want to try, please offer them in the comments)

As has happened before, I started writing this and then discovered a piece along the same lines by John Manzione over at MacNet V.2. It has to do with computer bigotry, but from Mac users! As John says, he "overheard a couple of Mac users at the Apple Store over the weekend brag to each other how PC users were a ‘bunch of losers’, and who, amazingly, told a potential switcher looking at an iMac that buying a Mac was both something he probably couldn’t afford and certainly would not be able to understand, all the while snickering like the dorks they were." If you have time (and really, if you're browsing this site, then I'm sure you have some time on your hands! ;) then I would I recommend reading the entire article, but I think Mr. Manzione sums everything up very well at the end:
The Mac is your platform of choice; it’s not your religion. (Or is it?) The Mac is a tool and it’s not the tools you use that are important, it’s what you do with those tools.

Again, I will reiterate that Macs are fantastic machines and if you haven't tried the Apple experience lately, then you should. (I say lately because, as our new friend and contributor MacInsider pointed out, there has been no better time to be a Mac user.) But if you're an Apple fanatic like me, be careful just how fanatic you get. As my Dad used to say, "Too much of anything is no good".

Excellent points, Jonahan. There are lots of ignorant people that don't admit to the things that Apple does wrong. I'm a huge Mac fan myself, but I know that the company and the platform isn't perfect.

Fanatacism Has It's Downfalls.

It's means "It is" or "It has"

Haven't you downloaded our Perl script to catch this error?

Jonahan 8/5/03, 1:41 PM EDT
Many thanks Steve and Grammar guy!

How did we miss that!? lol...it was even in the title! Geesh. ;)

Anyway, I'll check out that Perl script :)

It is true that Apple must be held to standards. When one does they are rewarded like I am about to be. I am about to upgrade from an 8500 to a G5 duel 2gig.The G5 duel 2gig is a worthy pro machine.

Gropitou 8/5/03, 4:28 PM EDT
Hey Grammar Guy, while you (rightly) picked on the "it's vs its" issue, you also wrote "fanatacism" instead of "fanaticism". Now why is it that most people picking on others' mistakes and misspellings usually make some stupid mistake themselves?
Fuddle-duddle! 8-)

Perfect. What a great article.

Once again, a great piece guys. You are exactly right, as is John Manzione.

While I try to keep my reading on the mac web to about an hour a day these days I never miss coming here, or for that matter, macnet2. On more than one occassion your two sites have been in sync on opinions and ideas and I think that's pretty cool.

There are plenty of people over at the trailer park mac web site, macnn, that hate manzione, however, when you think about it, if macnn hates you then you must be doing something right.

Since leaving the business of running my own site a couple of years ago I can see things in a different light, and I must admit that the writing here on this site is extremely good. Believe it or not that's a real compliment, have you read some of the so-called writers out there lately? This site, macnet2, and perhaps one or two more are the only ones showing any real talent.

Any mac web site that offer insightful, honest, and interesting original content deserves to be read.

Great article Jonahan. Really good points, I agree with you all the way.

It appears that most people are just plain ignorant about Macs.

It also appears that most people are ignorant about most things in life, period.

I am intolerant of ignorance. I strive for knowledge and constantly seek truth. People who choose to be ignorant, or are aware of their ignorance (is there such a thing, being aware of ignorance?), but continue to be ignorant are completely illogical to me.

The Mac platform is superior, bottom line. It's not a matter of opinion or a matter of choice. It's a matter of truth, plain and simple.

I absolutely love my mac. But there are some people (I feel sorry for them) that run software only written in the PC world. They have no choice. For them, PC's are the right machine.

Let's all take a moment of silence to lament for those people.

You hit it dead on there. It's just a computer that you choose to use. Some people would much rather use a PC. They really don't care what they use, as long as it's cheap. And that's fine. I don't have a problem with that. Some Mac users seem to have a problem with it though, and that is wrong.

HTML Samurai 8/8/03, 1:22 PM EDT
I have to agree with va1entino, I love my Mac. But I do know that it is not the only choice. I have a few very low end Linux boxes at home that I play with and use to teach myself some cool networking stuff. I even host my site off one of them. I even have a Windoze box that I use for gaming.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I use different OSes for different things, it works for me, and that is what REALLY matters!

Jonahan 8/8/03, 3:36 PM EDT
I have to say, thanks for the props, it really means a lot to us. Running a site like this on your own time, using all your own resources, can take a toll - so when you hear (or read) someone saying you did a good job, it makes it all worthwhile.

:)
