Macs Even Carve The Roast Beef!
Upon going to see my family on Christmas Day, my Dad asked me to take a look at his computer. His decidedly non-Mac computer. His Windows computer. You see where this is going, right?

Well anyway, he said it had been acting funny so he "turned it off", left the room, and let it go for the time being. So, feeling full of Christmas cheer and proud of my computer fixing abilities, I decided to see what I could do. I walked up to the beast and noticed that it was still running, but the monitor was off. A quick check and it seemed that things were ok, or at least as 'ok' as things can be with Windows, but that's 'right now' and who knows how weird things can get if you launch a program or two.

So I decided I should be proactive and run some updates on some of the "safety applications", namely Stinger (a virus and trojan scanner), AVG (a virus scanner), Zone Alarm (a firewall), and Ad-Aware. Keep in mind that none of these programs are actually from Microsoft, but I consider them necessary for daily use of Windows. (Good thing they're all free!)

The only update available from Microsoft for was Internet Explorer 6, which doesn't run that well on Windows 98. I also had to uninstall the "Critical Update Notification" because it was scaring my Mom: Windows would keep on telling her she had to update to IE 6, and she thought she did something wrong.

Well, after an hour of downloading and installing updates, removing ad-ware keys from the registry, and rebooting about 5,000 times, I was able to sit down to a wonderful Christmas dinner. I'm just glad my parents have a high-speed connection!

Oh well, at least I know what to get them for Christmas next year - a Mac!

You should have installed IE6 and left Critical Updates running. Are you trying to make the machine run badly?

Yes

Next Christmas, get them a new Mac and take the old Windows machine outback for family target practice!

Do it like that scene in 'Office Space'!

 Deep Thoughts
One day one of my little nephews came up to me and asked me if the equator was a real line that went around the earth, or just and imaginary one. I had to laugh. Laugh and laugh. Because I didn't know, and I thought that maybe by laughing he would forget what he asked me.
