Review: iPod Mini case by Otter Box |
There are approximately eleventy bagillion ipod cases available for the iPod Mini. They all have their own special features, but the primary purpose of each case remains the same; to protect the iPod Mini from becoming damaged. For this purpose there is no better case then the Otter Box iPod Mini Case. This case completely protects the iPod Mini from the elements, and is even waterproof. It is one of the sturdiest cases I have ever tried, and it even feels like it could hold up against some nasty drops.
I don't have an iPod Mini of my own, so when I received the Otter Box case, I borrowed an iPod Mini from my (very hesitant) mother, and tested this case out. The very first thing I noticed about the case was how well it was built. It felt very sturdy, and had waterproof gaskets around all the edges. There is a headphone jack inside the case that the iPod plugs in to, and an external headphone jack on the outside (so it is waterproof). The iPod fit very snugly inside, and would not rattle around. And the clip on the bottom is firm enough that it takes both thumbs to open. |
The case even has a removable belt clip that doubles as headphone cable management. But perhaps the coolest feature of the case is the membrane that covers the scroll wheel. It not only protects it, and keeps water out, but allows full use of the scroll wheel while it is in the case.
I knew the most important feature of the case was that it was waterproof, so I had to test that out. But I couldn't just dunk my mothers iPod Mini in water. Case or no case, she would have killed me. I had to test it first.

I stuffed the inside of the case with Kleenex.
Then I submerged the case in water with blue food coloring for 60 seconds
When the Kleenex came out of the case, it had no blue water on it.
Then I got brave, and put the iPod in clean water for 60 seconds. It was still dry when it came out.

This case is perfect for protecting the iPod in any condition, however it isn't a full time use solution. It is quite bulky. Here is a picture of it next to a 40 GB iPod Photo. As you can see it kind of negates the whole "Mini" part of the iPod Mini. And since it is waterproof, there is no way to hook up the dock connecter when it is in the case. Also the membrane over the scroll wheel takes a little getting used to. It works great, but you have to put more pressure on the membrane to get it to work then you would normally use. I wouldn't suggest playing games while it is inside the case.
But the purpose of this case isn't to be on the iPod at all times. It is made to protect the iPod under all conditions, and in that regard it is second to none. Well worth the $49.99 price tag if you need to protect your iPod Mini under harsh conditions.
