Project Looking Glass: an upcoming 3-D OS from Sun |
|
HTML Samurai reports on in interesting development by Sun called "Project Looking Glass":
"...it sounds like it will look a lot like the "Aqua" interface of Mac OS X, but with the flexibility and customization that we know (and love) Linux and JAVA for. This GUI, combined with a stable (and user friendly) distribution of Linux, has the potential to wipe Microsoft off of the face of the technology industry."
"...one of the coolest features I've read about is the ability to turn a web browser on it's side, place it on a "shelf" with others like it, and then have the option to pull it back out, view it, flip it over, and write a note on the back"

Looks like they borrowed heavily from OS X, but take a look - lots of neat ideas for Apple to possibly implement.

I am just wondering why I would want to view my browser from the other side? or why I would want to stack my windows , you can't really see what is on them, why not just hide them completely. Seems like someone with a too large monitor, too large video card and too much time but no idea what is actually usefull

I looked behind my browser window the other day. All there was was a bunch of wires and sh*t, and this big glass thingy.
Lucky I had a Swiss army knife to put all those bits back together again.
There were a couple of pieces left over when I'd finished, but it all seems to work OK when it's not spitting sparks.
And I won't be touching it with wet hands again, let me tell you!

I once saw an angel in my cornflakes.
It was a bit gristly, but it tasted real good.
Since then, though, I've been struck by lightning almost once a week, even when the sky is pure blue.
Go figure.

If you look at the video it does really look OS X -ish ... there's translucency and all that good stuff. But yeah, schmiddi, a lot of the stuff isn't really that useful. Everything Apple does (genie effect, Expose effects) are all done for a purpose. But maybe they'll clean it up more.
One thing I do know, if it doesn't have lickable Aqua buttons, it won't sell.

Sun's dumping a lot of R&D into this...I dunno if it'll be truly open-source. They need to make moolah :)

The windows won't rotate on my Mac, so I tried sticking my head through it to look at the other side and broke my monitor. :( My head is ok though.
"New & Exciting" is only exciting while it's new. Once it becomes "old" it pretty much just gets in the way. That's what I think of this so-called 3D project; It looks cool and all, but honestly, how productive does it really make you?
Like another user mentioned, if you can put eye candy with actual functionality, you then have a winning combination... Something like Expose is definitely very cool and extremely useful.

Deep Thoughts |
|
He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said, "Dust to dust," some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, "I'll be waiting for you in heaven--with a gun."
