BuyMusic.com - The Story That Just Won't Go Away
We have something else to add to the burgeoning melodrama that is the BuyMusic.com saga. As many of you should no doubt know, people far and wide are pointing out that BuyMusic just ain't as good as Apple's good 'ole iTunes Music Store. Some of the reasons include inconsistent DRM, the fact that they use Windows Media format, and just general navigation problems on the site. Another reason that some people have pointed out is that according to BuyMusic.com's terms of service, you don't acutally buy the music. Kind of ironic from a site called BuyMusic.com, eh? Here's the text from their site:

All downloaded Content is sublicensed to End Users and not sold, notwithstanding use of the terms “sell,” “purchase,” “order,” or “buy” on the Site or this Agreement.

I'd have linked to the site instead, but it would be useless. You see, BuyMusic.com seems to have fixed some of the aforementioned navigation problems that people were having. They did this by simply blocking anyone not using Internet Explorer from browsing the site. Pretty simple solution, huh?

MacMerc.com has posted a workaround for Safari, but I should say that BuyMusic's snootiness isn't constrained just to Mac users. Nope, this goes for Windows users as well. Internet Exporer is the only browser you can view the site with, any other browsers get redirected to a page that basically says, "thanks, but go screw yourself!" and then offers a link to download the Windows version of IE.

Why would they cut off not only Mac users (which we know Scott Blum doesn't care about) but also a large chunk of Windows users from not even being able to browse their site? I know that would turn me off from being a customer. Why not at least let them see your goods, but force people to use IE if they want to actually purchase something? Ah well, I'm sure it doesn't matter, as BuyMusic will surely be forced to either change their ways or go under, but you have to admit that they've given us all a few laughs and something to talk about!

Now I have to admit that I kind of lied to you. Y'see, actually you can browse BuyMusic.com with browsers other than Internet Explorer without fiddling with any settings. Just install and fire up Lynx - today's cutting edge Web browser that's even faster than Safari! Granted, this is mainly because there are no images to be loaded (it's only text-based) but hey, it has its purposes. Now if you can find a way to download music from BuyMusic.com with Lynx, let us know - and we'll administer a severe beating about the face and neck for having entirely too much time on your hands!

And you don't have to much time on your hands Jonahan? ;)

Lol. Seriously John-ster.

Can't you tell Camino and/or Safari both to report themselves as IE6? That would make the site happy, and let you browse it I'd think. I'm at work at the moment, on a Wintel PC with IE6, so I can't test that out.

You know, I should've clicked the link above to see what the 'workaround' was - it was what I was talking about: "Click it and go down to "User Agent" and then hit Windows MSIE 6. That's it. Go check out those crazy cats at BuyMusic!"

Aaaaaaaagh! No more pictures of Scott Blum and Tommy Lee please!!! Especially a near naked Tommy Lee....

Although it looks like Scott Blum doesn't mind, rather it looks like he's enraptured by his spokesman.

Jonahan 7/28/03, 8:19 PM EDT
Yeah Zack, I should've tried that too ;)

I could've sworn I had tried it at work and it still redirected me, but maybe I picked MSIE for Mac.

Ha! I didn't see this until after I posted "Buy Music.com Not That Good, But Pressure Is Still on Apple", but thanks :)

And I'm making a preemptive strike here, but I'm sure there will be that Windows user who says, "Well Apple had all sorts of problems too on their first day". To which I will retort that, yes they did, but it was only a bandwidth issue due to the immense demand for the service, plus it was fixed within a few hours. So in short, bitimus maximus heinemus. ;)

 Deep Thoughts
If I had a nickname, I think I would want it to be "Prince of Weasels", because then I could go up and bite people and they would turn around and go, "What the-?" And then they would recognize me, and go, "Oh, it's you, the Prince of Weasels."
