It Was My Favorite Channel |
|
You may have heard recently that Comcast, the people that own the "G4" T.V. network (Not the Apple branded processor, a T.V. Network all about gaming), had recently purchased TechTV. TechTV was the perfect channel for anybody interested in computers. It didn't matter if you were a newbie, or an advanced user there was something you could find to watch on that channel.
And they didn't just focus on Windows. They had great information on all operating systems. They even carried a Steve-note a few years ago. A lot of the pro-Mac attitude stemmed from a guy named Leo Laporte. On his web page, there is a disturbing article.
I've just learned that G4 has fired the entire staff of TechTV.
Per the WARN Act (governing plant closings) all the employees of TechTV have been given 60 days notice. The San Francisco operation will be shuttered by July. 100 of the existing jobs will be posted for those willing to relocate to LA.
Outgoing COO, Joe Gillespie will say good-bye to the troops tomorrow. Incoming CEO Charles Hirschorn will say hello (and good-bye) on Monday.
No word on which shows G4 will keep or which hosts will be kept on.
I feel for the employees of TechTV. They did a great job, and unfortunately, their jobs will be terminated under horrible circumstances. It was a favorite channel of mine, and I will be extremely sad to see it go. |

total shocker. This really sucks - even though I've only had network TV for the past 6 months so I'm not really missing out an anything, but it was a great station.

I am going to wait and see about this one. I do think that the way Comcast is going about things sucks, but I also think that some behind the scenes changes at Tech TV were needed. I really like Screen Savers, but it was getting a little bit sophmoric for TV after Leo left. I am a little surprised not to see Call For Help in hte new lineup.
From G4TV FAQ
Q: What will a typical programming day look like?
A: The merged network will be the nation's premier 24/7 television network all about video games, technology and the gamer lifestyle. The G4 programming day will showcase many existing G4 and TechTV series such as G4's ICONS; PULSE; JUDGMENT DAY; PLAYERS, and CHEAT! as well as TechTV's ANIME UNLEASHED; X-PLAY; SCREEN SAVERS; FRESH GEAR; and ROBOT WARS. G4 will also premiere new original programming which will be announced at a later date.

Bastards ... I hope that the host of Tech Tv will finally say what they always wanted to say on the air. Like Leo actually bashing Microsoft without mercy. This really blows.

I have not had Tech TV for a year or more. I used to watch The Screen Savers every day. I saw it once not too long ago and it was odd. There were new people and some of my favorites were gone or on different shows. However, I really feel for them all.

today Tech Tv gave 285 people the pink slip. I guess we are seeing what a great company comcast is.
Also word is comcast is looking to bring back a familar face to it's new network the one and only Chris Pirillo just one more reason not to watch this channel.

Gross. 24-hrs a day of gaming? C'mon, that's ridiculous. I certainly don't see a channel like that being around for too many years. Seriously, that's just stupid.
TechTV had a bit of something for everyone. Once again, com(munist)cast 'improves' something by ruining it. :-(

Deep Thoughts |
|
At first I thought, if I were Superman, a perfect secret identity would be "Clark Kent, Dentist," because you could save money on tooth X-rays. But then I thought, if a patient said, "How's my back tooth?" and you just looked at it with your X-ray vision and said, "Oh it's okay," then the patient would probably say, "Aren't you going to take an X-ray, stupid?" and you'd say, "Ah screw you, get outta here," and then he probably wouldn't even pay his bill.
