In iPhoto you can select multiple images to be used as your desktop. In iPhoto, use shift to select a number of images in order, or the Apple/Command key to select any other images. Hit the 'Desktop' button and you'll be taken to System Preferences with the images you select available in the "iPhoto Selection" folder. You can manually select the one you want, or have System Prefs change it for you automatically.
