An update on the iTunes/Pepsi contest |
|
Well, seeing as how the iTunes/Pepsi contest of '05 is now officially underway, let's talk about it!
I've been seeing the new bottles in my area since the middle of last week, albeit only in the form of Pepsi and Wild Cherry Pepsi. And I'm generally not one to drink much pop (or if I do I'm usually adding it to some alcohol) but there's something about paying $1.20 (the price of pop went up here in Ohio, I don't know about elsewhere) just to have a 1 in 3 chance of winning a free song. It's weirdly exciting and not only seems to make 1 free song worth more, but also makes the pop taste better. Or is it just me?
Whatever the case, chances are you're at least slightly interested in this contest, and therefore also interested in getting any winning edge that you can. Last year, people were able to use a highly effective method known simply as "The tilt" - which isn't a poker term, nor is it cheating. Surely you've heard of it, but if you're new to the planet, one would simply tilt a bottle of Pepsi at a 45 degree angle and read the cap. If you see random letters, that bottle has a code for a free song. Tons of geeks around the U.S. (including yours truly) spent entirely too much time looking at Pepsi bottles sideways in convenience stores, thus drawing the stares of clerks and other customers.
But scuttlebutt had it that this year Pepsi might actually stymie the tilt method - after all it wouldn't take much, maybe just a plastic covering over the writing inside the bottlecap. I seem to remember pulling these off of bottlecaps as a kid, so not only does this "oh-so-high-tech" prevention method exist, but it's actually been used before (possible by Pepsi itself, I'm not really sure).
Early reports of the iTMS/Pepsi contest were conflicting: some said the tilt method still worked and some said that Pepsi made the plastic harder to see through as well as obscured the letters on the cap. Well, after a Pepsi, a Wild Cherry Pepsi and a Mt. Dew, I am glad to report that the tilt method still works!
It's not really as easy as last year's contest, however. First off, Pepsi seems to be filling the bottles with more pop. Normally more pop is a good thing, but this means you have to tilt at an 80 degree angle and even then it's hard to see because the lettering is much lighter and barely readable. Perhaps the best thing to do is see how many rows there are. If you can make out 3 rows of words, then it says "Please play again" - so grab another bottle. If you can see 4 rows, you've got a winner. However, this year you can also win a "buy one get one free", which gets you 2 more shots at a song. (Incidentally, you've got a 1 in 3 shot at a free song and a 1 in 6 shot at a "buy one get on free", adding up to a 50% chance of winning anything at all - but bear in mind these are only rough estimates according to the rules)
So good luck - but remember that Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Mt. Dew Code Red are not the four food groups. Eat your brussel sprouts, get outside and play, and you are NOT allowed to get online to download your iTunes until AFTER you've finished your homework, young [insert gender here]!
(Oh and don't forget to space your entries out to once per hour to have a better chance of winning an iPod mini) |

Does it really matter when you redeam them? It was my understanding that you were entered into the drawings for the next day. To me this says you just get x entries in tomorrows drawings.

From da Rules:
Sweepstakes entry deadline for each drawing is 11:59:59 p.m. PST of the day prior to each daily drawing and 11:59:59 p.m. PST on 4/30/05 for the final drawing on 5/2/05. Odds of winning in a daily drawing depend upon the total number of eligible entries received as of the deadline for such drawing. All non-winning entries will be eligible for the next drawing and all subsequent drawings in the Sweepstakes.
It also sounds like you are entered in every drawing after that. So the Chances of winning are better at the beginning of the contest.
