Some helpful hints from your friends in Redmond (spider sense tingling!) |
|
So, you have been thinking about getting a flashed based MP3 player, eh? Well, congratulations. Now all you have to do is decide which one you want to get. Now, you could go about picking a player several ways.
There is always the hotchick selection method. This is where you go into various stores untill you see a cute sales girl then flirt with her as you randomly pick a player and have her check you out. Now, obviously this approach has its merits, but they tend to be short lived. Unless of course you end up taking her home that night and find out that she is a sex crazed maniac who wants it from you all the time. At which point one must conclude that that was the best $150 you ever spent and you should share the love by forwarding her sister's number to me at once.
However, if that plan falls through then you can always pick up an issue of consumer reports and peruse through their ratings. Since this magazine tends to be fairly unbiased this is a good option. You can see all of the devices, their features, price, compatability, everything. Then you can read their suggestions and ultimately pick the one you want. It all will depend on what is most important to you. Is price the biggest selling point? Maybe features like an FM tuner or stop watch? Or maybe you really like Napster so better keep that in mind.
Of course if neither of those options appeals to you then may I recomend Bill Gates' guide to picking the right player. Now, at first glance you might think that our good friends in Redmond are actually trying to be nice and helpful. But then you will begin to notice a large disturbance in the force.
Makes you smile doesn't it? You know, it almost seems like this article is tailored to specifically exclude a certain company's products. Did you get that nagging feeling too? Creepy, huh?
For an amusing breakdown of that article look right here.
Ahhh, nothing like a fresh helping of MS FUD first thing in the morning. Can you smell the FUD from Redmond? Or maybe that is fear you are smelling? : ) |

Actually, this is pretty scary. I hope we don't see a standardization here. A lot of companies are betting the WMA and WMV are going to dominate and are adopting these formats for their products even though they suck. And in a lot of ways they are right. Most people don't know the difference and are going to go with whatever they have. With Microshaft having 90% of the desktop market, these formats are already VERY wide spread. Apple had better let the cap off of Fairplay soon. The issue extends far beyond MP3 players. Almost every set top box out there will only support Micrshaft formats. These devices far out number MP3 players. Apple needs to start partnering up with people like Roku and ElGato. I just hope they don't get too greedy. It has happened before.

Yeah it's gonna b ea fun battle. Here's hoping that apple doesn't have to open anything up, but it's sounding like they probably should.

I don't understand what's so scary about this, this is microsoft's website of course they are going to advertise microsoft's products. Sounds like to me you're just being over zealous.
Also to nhmacusr, this is exactly what Mac does and has been doing. They always have been closing out the third party from development which proves why their market share and status is significantly small. They don't welcome open competition for their music player, and so because of that Microsoft may win the standardization battle. It depends on how compelling the iPod really is.

To whom were you directing that?

Chad,
I should have been more clear in my post. I wasn't responding to microsofts article per se, but to their technology in general. I don't think it is any surprise that Micrsoft advertises in the manner that they do. Any company would promote thier own products.
I am also well aware of Apple's track record with ground breaking technology and just like every other Mac user out there, I am hoping that they make the right business decisions this time. So, far they have, but no one else is lining up at the door to their camp. Although it is an early sign of the way things can go, it is still a sign and shouldn't be ignored.

I guess we were all guilty, in a way. We all shot him, we all skinned him, and we all got a complimentary bumper sticker that said, "I helped skin Bob."
