If Apple Had a Game Division, Oh the Possibilities. . . |
|
Recently there have been a couple rumors floating around the net about how Apple might create its own game division. Of course these tidbits of information have been overshadowed by the release of Tiger and Apple's uplifting financial news but the question still remains, will they do it?
Lets assume for the moment that Apple will create its own game division in the very near future. Lets further assume that they are going to quickly release several high end games that fully take advantage of Tiger's new under the hood enhancements, my question to you readers is this:
What type of game would you like to see first?
Here is a small list with examples to help you decide:
1. RPG - Final Fantasy
2. MMORPG - World of Warcraft
3. FPS - Halo
4. Racing - Grand Turismo
5. Sports - Game Day
6. Fighting - Virtua Fighter
7. Puzzle - Myst
8. Strategy - Civillization
9. Action - Tomb Raider
When you respond please post the TYPE of game you want, games that are similiar and any other cool ideas or relevant desires you might have. For myself, this would be my answer:
Type - FPS
Similar Games - Halo, Half Life, Marathon
Cool Idea - Use Quicktime 7 to incorporate scalable video into the game. Also allow one's game to be saved as a quicktime movie. |

Type - Strategy
Similar Games - Age of Empires, Age of Mythology
Those are my favorite games to play on the PC, of course right after those addictive ones on Pogo. I don't know what you would do to make them better than they are. The graphics are really top-notch already (I just got AoMythology - I know, like 3 years old) and the general game formula is already there. However, the same sort of thing you mention - allowing me to save my game as a quicktime movie - could be fun, especially if they added an editor so that I could sweep around the village and get closer detail. Of course, that'd be fun once, then I'd never do it again. Regardless, on my 1.25GHz PowerBook with 1GB RAM, the game sometimes behaves a little sluggishly, and it would be great to have it optimized by people that really know Macs, like, you know, the good people at Apple.

Type: RPG
Similar Games: Grand Theft Auto Vice City (better than S.A.), The Sims 2
Sure, The Sims 2 will be out for Mac soon - but what about Vice City? Doesn't seem like that will ever be available for Mac - and I'm too cheap to go buy a PS2 or (gulp) give M$ money for an X-Box. Plus, my PeeCee is too slow to run it. With all of Tiger's new enhancements - you could feel like you're there, running over the paramedic with his own ambulance.

It's really sad that the only game I play on my Mac anymore is Poker. I've heard that just as in life as you get older you play less intense sports (i.e. flag football), aging geeks have to drop down and play less intense video games.
(* sigh *)
I used to be able to pull Quake 3 all-nighters, but I just can't do it anymore.
:-p

So, how old are you?
And do we have any Civillization III fans here?

Oh I know the feeling. It takes 2 hours (if you rush things) before everything starts to get interesting. If you play it carefully, micromanaging everything, then you can easily burn 6 hours and still barely have gotten through the first era.
I am just thankful (sort of) that the expansion packs haven't come out for the Mac yet. If they ever do then my free time will once again be chewed up playing that game.

I don't play many games but I would love to see a game division created! (Card games are a weakness for me and I have to avoid anything from Blizzard Entertainment or I will not get any work done for weeks at a time!)
Actually, I would rather see a game company created that created games only for PowerPC based systems. Making games just for Mac would not create switchers (i.e. Bugdom) but if the coolest new game for Nintendo or X-Box 2 is also available on Mac but not Windows, gamers would take notice! I know too many people who want a computer just for playing lots of games, checking email, surfing the internet, and then maybe writing the occasional paper on. (In that order) These people mostly use Windows because while we have some great games for Mac but many of the biggest and brightest games are only available for game machines and Windows.

Wow, I need to proof my comments better... "...company created that created..." – Fugly! And I meant “was in place of “is when I wrote “…if the coolest new game for Nintendo or X-Box 2 is also…
I apologize to all of you for that hideous slaughter of the English language.

KOTOR is out on Mac.
Have you tried the Mac only MMORPG Clanlord by Deltatao? It's been out for years. Graphics aren't flashy 3D but it's one hell of a tight and friendly community and fun. Been playing since it beta back in 1998 or so.

Jstoup - I just turned 31, but I was more or less just being silly. Altho it's true I don't really play many games on my Mac - I stick mainly to the PS2.
But yes, a Power-PC based game division would rock - instead of the ported games from the PC side. I guess there are some like Ambrosia, but we need more!!!

Deep Thoughts |

I only played hooky one time, so I'll never forget it. I hid in the bushes right outside my classroom. And since the window was open, I could hear the teacher, so I went ahead and took notes. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand, but she couldn't see me.
