Put that icon at the 4001 pixel mark, I dare ya! |
|
We have been talking a lot about the bad parts of Windows, with all the viruses, bad DVD drives causing trouble, viruses, Windows exploits, and viruses (or is it virii?), and a lot about how the Mac is so much better. Now, I know this is a Mac site, and that sort of conversation can be expected, but I think it would be healthy to focus on a negative aspect of the Mac to try to get both sides of the spectrum. That way we can all be informed by looking at the good and the bad of the Mac, and 2 Guys can have some journalistic integrity.
OK, stop laughing.
But seriously, I found a real live limitation of Mac OS X. While perusing the Apple Knowledge Base, I came across article 25500 which states that OS X allows a maximum desktop display width of 4000 pixels across all displays.
So what does this mean? If I have 4 monitors with resolutions each higher than 1000 pixels, will the desktop just stop at each end? Can I even have that many displays? Can I drag windows beyond the 4000 pixel mark? Will it even work? Is that picture of the girl I just met online real? These are all valid questions. Well, except maybe that last one.
But all it really means is you can't drag icons past the 4000 pixel mark. The desktop picture will still stretch beyond that point, and you can still use the screen area for windows. Also, that picture, it isn't real. In fact, it is probably another guy.
Here are some possible monitor setups that will keep you within the limitation, straight from Apple's web site:
- Two displays, each set to a width of 1920 pixels.
- Three displays, each set to a width of 1280 pixels.
- Three displays, two set to a width of 1152 pixels and the third set to a width of 1600 pixels.
- Four displays, two set to a width of 1152 pixels and two set to a width of 832 pixels.
Well, Now you can't say we only focus on the positive aspects of the Macintosh, can ya? Hopefully this issue will be addressed in 10.3 so I can have as many monitors as I want set to the highest resolution possible. I have always dreamed of seven monitors surrounding me, all with resolutions of 1920 X 1080, or better.

Nice article iKen :)
About that "journalistic integrity" thing....while we do tout the Mac and it's virtues and point out the faults of Windows and Wintel PC's in general, I think we actually do a pretty decent job of pointing out the faults of the Mac and Apple in general.
While we're Mac fans, and fans of Apple, we're not blind and we're quick to point out where Apple mis-steps. I think that's hard to balance sometimes, and we toe the line, but all in all, I think we do a damn good job!

C'mon, I've dealt with much worse than this. It's like you're not even trying! Pshaw......can't get any good ignorance these days.
Really though, if you want to do some damage, have some facts, use both a Mac and a PC so you can honestly compare them, and state your opinion clearly and concisely (and punctuation helps too).

I think a new, different kind of bowling should be "carpet bowling." It's just like regular bowling, only the lanes are carpet instead of wood. I don't know why we should do this, but my God, we've got to try something!
