After a few months of using this G4 Tower at work, I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase my very own Mac. I am pleased to say that I have won a tremendous bidding war on eBay to walk away with a 400MHz G3 PowerBook (Wall Street). I will be receiving the lil monster via UPS sometime next week.
Now I must take a moment to make a few decisions about what to do with it.
First - OS: Now don't kill me, but I am going to go with Yellow Dog Linux 3.0. I am a Linux Lover, and also a lover of Apple hardware - Perfect Match!
Secondly - RAM: The 192 MB that is currently installed will be sufficient... For now.
Next - Hard Drive: The stock 4 GB drive just won't do! The icky thing is that (from what I am told) it has a SCSI hard drive, which could get very expensive to replace.
Finally - Let the mad modz begin: I totally fell in love with this Sapphire PowerBook mod. I am going to attempt something similar, but no concrete plans as of yet.
What does all of this really mean...?
I am practically Windows free! I am going to keep my current crappy laptop as a print server. I have a Lexmark printer that is almost useless without Windows . The old 166 MHz PC that is currently filling that position will become (you guessed it) a Linux server - DNS Cache server, because Road Runners DNS SUCKS! That will leave me with my desktop PC: it is dual boot with Red Hat Linux and Windows, and yes, I have the same excuse for that as everyone else - I only use it for gaming!
If anyone would like to make a donation to the "Samurai is PowerBook Crazy Fund", just send me an e-mail, and I'll send you my PayPal account number. :)
