Seeking Feedback For New Open-Source Weblog
I'm working on a new blogging system (or Weblog), and am seeking comments and suggestions from all y'all. The plan so far is to take the code for the 2 Guys Site, clean it up a whole bunch, and make it open-source. It won't look exactly like this site for a couple reasons - 1) I want it to look and function more like a personal blog and 2) We want this site to remain unique.

I also plan on making the blogging system use universal standards (as far as PHP blogging systems go) like CSS style sheets used by the 'big boys', i.e. Movable Type, pBlog, PostNuke, etc. By open-sourcing it, I hope to encourage others to write modules for it. It should have much of what 2 Guys currently has, or at least have the option to install in yourself (like Shoutbox, RSS from other sites, Random Quotes, etc.).

So ... gimme some ideas, please! Is this a good idea? Does the world need another blogging system? If so, what should I name it? I've generically dubbed it "MyBlog" for now, and that may just stick, but I'm open to other ideas. Also any other thoughts as to what features it should have would be great!

Thanks!

I'm not even sure what the hell a blog is.

I think it should have flying elephants. Everyone loves flying elephants!!

Seriously I think it should definitely include a personal calander plug in and a photo album plug-in.

You might call it 2blog thereby retaining the "2" from 2Guys...

Should you? I think so. This site has some zip to it, and if that carries over to the blog engine, then that's good for blogging.

I like that idea condor!

Yet you watch DVD'd from 4 til bedtime???

Jonahan 8/29/03, 5:21 PM EDT
Hehehe.......so instead of you taking 2 minutes to look it up, you want us to spend that time and explain it for you?? Well, I guess I'm a softie. Here goes:

The word blog comes from "Web log" or "weblog". Usually they're personal diaries, but can also be full-fledged "sites". Usually they're created with open-source software, like PHP for the scripting and MySQL for the database. The advantage of blogs is they're dynamic and it's easy to post stuff, rather than using straight up HTML. The 2 Guys site and admin section is a perfect example.

So anyhoo, good ideas guys. I think a calendar is a must. And I like the 2blog name, or something along those lines. "2blog or not 2blog" ;)

And just a thought for a module, but NFL scores embedded in your page would be cool. Or maybe stats. I dunno, that may not be that useful for a blog, but maybe we can work that into a fantasy football league manager someday ;)

Jonahan you are going soft in your old age. 10 minutes ago you would have said screw him let him look it up on his own. ;)

Call it McBlog (short for Mac)

Condor 8/30/03, 10:37 PM EDT
Whatever you call it, best run it by the TIBCO gang and make sure they aren't already usin' the name in their world famous enterprise.

Jonahan 9/1/03, 1:14 PM EDT
Hehehe....along those same lines, McDonalds would come after me if it was called McBlog. Sounds tasty tho!

I do like MacBlog tho. Or how about "2 Guys, a Mac, and a Website's Blogging System"? Shorter isn't always better, at least, that's what my woman says. ;)

In any case I'll probably have it posted over at SourceForge.com so the progress can be tracked and people can submit their comments on it. Never used their system before, so I hope it's easy...

 Deep Thoughts
Once when I was in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai, I met a mysterious old stranger. He said he was about to die and wanted to tell someone about the treasure. I said, "Okay, as long as it's not a long story. Some of us have a plane to catch, you know." He stared telling hes story, about the treasure and his life and all, and I thought: "This story isn't too long." But then, he kept going, and I started thinking, "Uh-oh, this story is getting long." But then the story was over, and I said to myself: "You know, that story wasn't too long after all." I forget what the story was about, but there was a good movie on the plane. It was a little long, though.
