 Starting a MUG Update 1
About 12 years ago there was a Mac User Group, or MUG, in my area. My mother would take me there every month (hey, I was 12), and I loved it. I learned a lot from the MUG, and I met a lot of people in my community that loved their macs as much as I did. Well, we lost our meeting place, and things just never got started again from there. For years I have wanted to run my own MUG, and I have always thought about it, but was never serious until recently.

Jonahan and I have been discussing starting a MUG for a few months now. With the recent surge of Mac users in the area, because of OS X, because of the iPod, the iTunes Music Store, the iMac, etc., things just seem 'right' now. Then when I heard the story told by rlhamon it inspired me to finally go through with it, and start a group.

I have found a place to hold the meeting, and I have spoken with Jonahan. I even have some ideas for the first meeting. But, I have been researching the hell out of this, and I see that we have a long road ahead of us. We have to create a web page, start a news letter, make flyers, get local interest, create a structure for the group, set a meeting itinerary, etc. and we are hoping to have this done in 3 short weeks.

Our ultimate goal is to have an Apple recognized MUG with at least 25 active members, monthly meetings, a newsletter, web page, ect.. So what I plan to do is update our progress with the MUG on 2 Guys, when ever there has been significant progress. For now, we are planning on having a traditional user group in the Lima, OH area but we may branch in to a online user group. Who knows, We could even stream the meetings, or have online "guests" through iChat AV. The possibilities are endless.

So far, I have a collection of to do's, and ideas along with the requirements by Apple to start a user group. Pretty much everything is tentative right now. I have contacted my regional liaison and hope to get some good ideas from her. I have found that there are a lot of really good resources for starting an MUG, including from Apple. www.apple.com/usergroups is a great place to start for anyone interested in finding a group, or starting their own.

So wish me luck over the next few weeks. I'm going to need it.

Is there a way to display the poster's IP when he/she posts? I'm pretty sure each of these people are really just one sexually frustrated troll.

Wasabe 10/13/03, 2:41 PM EDT
yeah. what pav said.

JACK 10/13/03, 3:52 PM EDT
Yea. What wasabe said.

How could i get involved in MUG?

iKen 10/13/03, 4:12 PM EDT
Once we have a webpage up, and have more info, you can get involved that way. Or if you are in the Lima, OH area you can come to the meeting.

rlhamon 10/13/03, 5:58 PM EDT
can't wait ken this is something that this area needs. Mac newbies added with people who would give them suggestions on what programs to buy and what works for them in the past is great for our community. As well as showing the myth of mac's are more expensive and can't do everything that a windows computer can to rest.
Let me know what i can do to help.

iken must have a great mother...she made him a smart guy starting at age 12. I can see from some of the other comments that some guys haven't decided to be smart yet! sounds like guys who don't know both platforms...can only cut on MACS to try to make the Windows look like a real computer! Grow up guys and come into a better world with a MAC.

Wasabe 10/16/03, 9:02 PM EDT
i can give a big military school "Hua!" to that mustang mom.

rlhamon 10/17/03, 6:15 PM EDT

I have no friends to tell about my [doodoo]ty windows woos I dee'oh im a troll my windows has a security hole and they send e-mail to thier certified professional about there virus woos I dee'oh...... If you are reading this on a windows operating system your at a security risk for being on one web page for too long.

rlhamon 10/17/03, 6:31 PM EDT
is there a set date iKen?

Jonahan 10/17/03, 9:01 PM EDT
Nice, Mustang Mom - you too rlhamon! (I wonder who's mom you are Mustang Mom?!?? ;)

And yes, the date is set for Saturday, Nov. 1st, at 3:00. I can give more details by email or something if you want, just let me know. Also, we'll be meeting up at BW3's in Lima for football on sunday around 1:00, or maybe a little before (that way it's not too noisy yet) to have a quick meeting and we can also distribute flyers.

=)
