Acquisition - The Nice Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Client
I simply love Acquisition! It's fast, clean, and less sucky than Limewire. It's simple and it just works.

Ever feel like your computer is just plain slow as molasses when running LimeWire? Well go get Acquisition and you'll no longer have this problem.

It's a small app that kicks the crapola out of LimeWire. It works like LimeWire, as you just put in what you're looking for, hit return, and get the results. However, unlike LimeWire, it doesn't take 5 years to get connected to the servers. I'll walk you through the setup and usage of it. Ready?!?

Step 1: Download it. You may need to get Java 1.4.1 if you haven't already.

Step 2: Install it. Same as all OS X apps, just drag it to your Applications folder or wherever else you want it.

Step C: Launch it. You'll get a screen that wants you to register. Register this program. It's only $15 and it's very much worth it.

Step 4: I always go to the prefs before I do anything in these kinds of programs to check server connections and sharing settings to be sure everything is pointed to the right folders, and that I have as many servers as possible to get the best results. So go to Acquisition:Prefrences

Step 5: First settings are the General Settings, nothing too important here unless you don't want your kids looking at porn.

Step 6: Click on Network. Here's where you get to maximize your bandwidth. If you have a fast connection and computer (I'd say any G4 and a cable modem), set the "I connect to the internet via:" to Local network, and set the "Try to connect to:" to 6 peers. Now, if you don't want people mooching off your bandwidth, uncheck the "Allow this computer to become an Ultrapeer". For some reason, "Always act as an Ultrapeer" is greyed out (maybe new feature coming soon or something, I don't know).

Step 7: Click on Download. This sets where your files get downloaded. Like mine is set to /Volumes/MP3z. You can put them wherever you like by just hitting the browse button and selecting the folder.

Step 8: Click on Sharing. If you want to share your collection of MP3's, this is where you do it. Just click on "Add Folder" and add whichever folder you want. If you have a fast upload speed, I would recommend this. I however, am only alotted 15k/sec. uploads, so I don't . But you can set how many people can connect to your songs at a time and how many they can get from you.

Step 9: Click on iTunes. This is a neat feature - I think Acquisition will automatically add the songs you download to your playlist and play it for you. If you don't want to interrupt the song you're listening to, then just click on the "Play the song if nothing else is playing". Easy as cake. Also, there are a couple more options which are self-explanatory.

Step 10: That's it for the setup. I know it seems long but it's really not. I promise!

Step 11: Close the prefs and go back to the app. Now all you have is the big X in the middle of the screen. What do I do, you ask? Well that's an easy one - just type in the "Search for Files" box for whatever you're looking for, i.e. MP3's, movies, porn etc., etc. - and Viola!

Step 12: Downloading Files. Double click on the one you want, then go down to the bottom left or right (depending on where the pane opens on your machine) click on downloads and it should be downloading. You can check your uploads as well - to do so, just click on "Uploads".

Basically that's it. Simple app and it's MUCH MUCH MUCH faster than LimeWire. I like it, if you couldn't tell, and I hope you do too.

Oh man. I just downloaded Aquisition, and I can already tell it rocks. It's a little stripped down compared to Limewire, but on the other hand... it dosesn't suck. The iTunes playlist is a very handy feature as well.

If you ever feel like you're on the verge of a nervous breakdown, just follow these simple rules: First, calm down; second, come over and wash my car; third, shine all my shoes. There, isn't that better?
