How To Be A Mac Geek In 10 Easy Steps |
|
I get hundreds of e-mail a week, mostly from women, asking me for advice on how to become a Mac geek. Most of the e-mails are disguised as weight loss, viagra, porno, male enhacement, and dating website offers, but the subtext just screams: "How can I be as geek as you". Or maybe the subtext is screaming that I am a fat pervert with a small flaccid penis that can't find a date. Either way, in my head people ask me that, and that's really all that counts. So as a favor to all who ask, I present to you, the 10 essential steps to becoming a Mac geek.
10. Read MacMinute.com. Religiously.
Any Mac geek worth their weight in iPods keeps up with current events in the world of Apple, and no other Mac news website out there will keep you as informed in all things Mac quite like MacMinute.com. You should check this website at the very minimum 32 times a day. Seriously, check it often. You don't want to be left in the dark with Apple news.
9. Get Geek Gear from ThinkGeek.com.
What good is a Mac geek with out proper toys and apparel to show the world you are indeed a geek? Although the site isn't Mac specific, they are Mac friendly and there is something for every geek on that web site, guaranteed. (as I write this, in front of me is a USB Desktop Aquarium, a FX Illuminated Mouse Pad, and a Fireworks USB Hub. I love that store) And some of the best geek apparel money can buy.
8. Get Apple Branded Apparel from The Missing Bite.
Think Geek has great general geek apparel, however a true Mac geek needs Apple specific apparel from The Missing Bite. Nothing shows the world how proud you are of your Mac than a T-shirt, hat, or just a tote bag. Plus they have just about anything else you would want an Apple logo on. Also, there is always eBay for great deals on Apple apparel.
7. Sport an Apple Sticker on Your Car.
As a Mac geek it is your duty to put an Apple sticker on anything with wheels. It doesn't matter if it is an old school colored Apple, a new style white Apple, or your very own custom sticker you absolutely need an Apple sticker on your wheels.
6. Litter Your House With Apple Posters
What better way to show off your favorite computer than with posters highlighting the machine's good looks. There are several places to find Apple posters, but since you are already at RedLightRunner, go ahead and check out their Apple posters. Another great place is, again, eBay. In fact, almost anything is available on eBay. Heck, here is an auction for a pair of iBook announcement posters that comes with a free iBook!
5. Keep Up On Apple Rumors
Apple Insider, Think Secret, Mac OS X Rumors, Mac Rumors, and even 2GAMAAW are excellent places to catch up on Apple gossip. The only thing Mac geeks worry about more than what Apple has already released, is what they are GOING to release. These sites help guide you in the right direction.
4. Mac Magazine Subscriptions
Every Mac geek has to have at least one Mac magazine they are subscribed to. Even though most of the news and CD content you can get on the Internet a month or two before-hand, it's great to see that stuff on paper. There are several Mac magazines, but the two best are easily named. If you would rather participate in good old-fashioned shenanigans than read straightforward serious articles (and I am guessing since you read our website that you probably fall into the first category) I would suggest MacAddict Magazine. If, however, you do like more serious articles, then MacWorld is for you.
3. Three Words: Gadgets, Gadgets, Gadgets.
This doesn't just pertain to Mac geeks, but every single geek on this rock should have their fair share of gadgets. Cell phones, PDA's, iPods, even those little calculator watches. Get as many gadgets as you can, and find a way to put them all on your body. Belts, pockets, nose rings, what every you have to do to wear them. And to be super-geek, make sure all the gadgets are sync-able with iSync.
2. Participate in Mac Based Forums.
This goes for every geek, no matter what your skill level. From newbie to pro, there is something to find on forums. If you're a newbie, pose a questions to countless numbers of people - someone out there is bound to know the answer. If you're a pro, share your knowledge and help others become pros. Who knows, that newbie you help today may answer a question you have in a couple years. There are around eleventy dozen Mac based forums out there. (I made up a number, because there are way to many to guess how many there are.) But the only one you need, is the one at our little corner of the World Wide Web.
1. Share All That is Mac With Everyone You Know.
One of the most important things that you can do as a Mac geek is show Windows users that there is a better choice. Show them that they don't have to put up with crashes, viruses, illegal operations, frustrating software, lousy code, or an ugly machine and OS. Use every opportunity to point out how much better things are on the Mac. A great example; I did a DJ gig for a wedding, and the night before I met with the sound guys from the church. When I told them I would be using my computer for the music the first question was "Aren't you afraid it's going to crash?" I just laughed, and said "No", and with out missing a beat I said "It's a Mac".

Yes you are a failure. May God have mercy on your soul...
Just kidding. I don't do half of this stuff but I consider myself pretty damn geekified.
If you're ever in doubt of your geekiness, just remember what Cosmic Stan would say: "Maybe we should try to isolate the waffles from the floorboards. That way, we can see the future in the syrup."
I'm not sure what it means, but the point I'm trying to make is that waffles are delicious.

Great, I have a long way to go. BUT there is one thing you forgot! macupdate.com or versiontracker.com. Every true macgeek spends allot of his time there constantly looking for ways to update or further enhance his beloved computer. Am I right? I am.
