Michael Jackson, Jews, Arabs and the Infamous Apple 2 Button Mouse |
|
Apple users have been dreaming of the day when a two-button mouse would come standard with a new Mac. Unfortunately, over the past two decades it has appeared more likely that the Jews and Arabs would stop killing each other than Apple producing a two-button mouse. But if the rumor mongers are to be believed, change is in the air.
Do I hear the sound of safeties clicking on?
Could it be? Really and truly? Apple is going to do away with its beloved and cherished one-button mouse in favor of this newfangled multi-button craziness?
Maybe. But I wouldn't get out the balloons and confetti just yet. Mac fans have driven themselves nuts over the years by saying things like "This is it! This is the year when it happens! Good-bye Kensington, hello Apple." And yet, every year their hopes are crushed.
It's like how each year we hope that Michael Jackson will stop screwing kids and turn his life around and each year we are disappointed. We always manage to act shocked when another kid comes forward. Well, this year try not to act too shocked if this whole story turns out to just be smoke and mirrors.
Oh well, we can still dream right?

Wow. That's pretty much, well, wow. I didn't expect that from you guys, but it's good. I like seeing people not afraid to say things, it makes me feel good, feel not alone in the world. And if Apple puts out like the rumors say, I can get rid of my Microsoft mouse, my only concession to the evils in this world.

It'll ruin the mac.
Part of what makes the one button mouse worth holding onto is that it stops developers from hiding options under a right click. Say what you want about people not understanding two buttons being dumb, I've trained older people on computers, and it is amazing how often they click both buttons or right click instead of left click. It is intuitive to those of us that have been using computers forever, but it just plain isn't to many many people.
So Apple introduces the two button mouse...and then what? Do we get rid of the tool bar that runs across the top in the Finder, since we can just stash all of the needed items in the right click menu?
Mac OS X works great with a mult button mouse. I can't work without my 8-button anymore. But I love the fact that I can take a single button mouse and get the same work done. You just can't do that in windows.
Try this: Go into windows and on the desktop, make a new folder without right clicking. What did you have to do?
On the mac you could right click, but you can also use the Finder Toolbar.
You will rue the day Apple let developers become lazy and take their focus from usability.
A two button mouse is an awful idea.

I posted this over at MacMischeif too:
I find that I am much faster with a one button mouse for most tasks. I thik it has more to do with Apples well thought out design than with anything else. I can do most things I want to do with a single mouse click right from the front interface (at the most a key and a single click). When I get back to a windows box, where I am in contextual menu hell, a two button mouse is essential.

And that's exactly it. When a developer knows that every user has a two button mouse, they stop developing for the single click. I hate the idea of a standard two button mouse and really think that the day we see it from Apple will be the day it stops being the innovative company it is. Two buttons may be faster at doing some things, but one button and programs built for one button, will always have a huge usability advantage for new and experienced users alike.

I don't see it being a standard mouse. Apple will still bundle in the 1 button and have the 2 button as a BTO option and sell it as well. That would cure the developer issues.

*shrugs* I use a two button mouse already although i have to say that the original Apple mouse was a little better. Altogether i prefer Logitech's mouse design, though.

"Jews and Arabs would stop killing each other"
It's Jews and Muslims.

Also, on a mac I find myself always using the control click to bring a menu up, and I find it very annoying that there is no 2 button mouse out there.

I concur that Apple won't give the multi-button mouse out as standard issue, but as an extra. Just another problem for possible switchers that Apple is trying to get rid of. :

Um, no, its Jews and Arabs. There are plenty of very secular Arabs who hate the Jews (read Israel) for various crimes, perceived and real. Not every person killed in Israel's wars were muslim and not every person effected by Israel's west bank policy are muslim. That was why I specified Arabs not muslims.
But thank you for trying to correct me.
Better luck next time.

When you first start wearing a turban, probably the most common mistake is wrapping it too tight. You have to allow the head to breathe.
