 10.3.9 Warning!
Mac OS X 10.3.9 has been released via software update. I found out about this from an e-mail from macosx.com this evening. I am normally one who would update immediately, but there was something in the e-mail that made me hesitant. namely this:

"Apple has released 10.3.9 Update for Mac OS X tonight. However, many people are having problems with the update so make sure you have a good backup before performing."

I have been a member of macosx.com, and recieving e-mails from them for a long time. But that is the first time I have ever seen an alert like that. So I did some research. It 10.3.9 appears to cause problems in safari, make sure you read this article before upgrading: Mac OS X 10.3.9 #2: Safari crashes on launch; Broken JavaScript, java; solutions. And let us know in the comments if you have updated and, if so, if you are having any problems. (Read: This way you can be the guinea pig, and I can decide if I really want to upgrade, or just wait for two weeks until Tiger is released. umm... I didn't just Say that did I?)

I updated straight away. I think my system seems to be running better, https:// (ie gmail) seems to load faster, and the gmail loading doesn't hang like it used to.

I haven't had any problems except I used to use 'command'+'shift'+'arrow left/right' to change between tabs and it has changed itself to 'command'+'shift'+'{/}', which is slightly annoying but I'll get over it. Everything else seems fine and dandy.

matty 4/17/05, 4:57 AM EDT
and view source is now set as 'option'+'command'+'U' (it used to be 'option'+'command'+V didn't it?)...

madscientistuk 4/17/05, 6:38 AM EDT
I updated as soon as it was released and so far haven't run into any problems.

DJLC 4/17/05, 9:37 AM EDT
You bet your ass it has problems. MY entire right side menu would freeze if processor use with over 95%. The clock, CPU monitor, everything that didn't change depending on application (FIle, Edit, blah blah). Then after that froze - programs wouldn't launch. JUst sit there bouncing... over and over... forever. So I had to reboot to the Panther install and repair the disk and permissions. After that - everything is perfect. AND Safari works again! :-D!!

patRice 4/17/05, 11:30 AM EDT
Repairing disk permissions is something one should always do before updating OS X! I have had no problems whatsoever with 10.3.9. And it seems to run better than 10.3.6 to 10.3.8. (On my dual USB G3 iBook - which has seen 4 logic board exchanges! Poor thing...) Can't wait for 10.4! :-)

fuzzmanmatt 4/17/05, 1:49 PM EDT
Well I just learned something! I never knew that there was a keyboard shortcut to switch tabs. ROCK!!

I've had no problems with it yet, but I don't do much with my machine. AlBook 1.33 15"

Ains 4/17/05, 4:19 PM EDT
Me too! I learn new things everyday! errr, almost everyday, because, as a mac user, I already know everything.

speedyrev 4/17/05, 10:10 PM EDT
Updated as soon as it came out. No probs here. Seems to be an improvement:)

DJLC 4/17/05, 10:22 PM EDT
You all are lucky as hell. I can't take screenshots even. I can - but it will keep taking the screen over and over and replacing the file - making it pointless. Tiger sure as hell work better, otherwise I'm going to reinstall Panther and stick with 10.3.0. This is bull[doodoo]!

Jonathan Monahan 4/18/05, 7:55 AM EDT
Worked fine on my 1.25GHz Powerbook.

dab2 4/18/05, 8:11 AM EDT
Had a Safari problem but it was an easy fix. I did have Pages crap-out on me after I updated and I have never had that happen before but I am not sure that it had anything to do with 10.3.9.

nhmacusr 4/18/05, 11:07 AM EDT
No trouble here. 15" 1.67 GHz PowerBook.

DJLC, maybe you should just bite the bullet and save your allowance for a Mac mini :)

4/18/05, 11:42 AM EDT
I had a problem with Safari crashing, but it is easy to fix. Remove the Acid Search plug-in in /Library/SIMBL or in ~/Library/SIMBL. That's it. No other problems. System appears *happy*

Johan 4/18/05, 1:18 PM EDT
I seem to have a different problem. I haven't run System update in a couple months (around) and when I tried it just the other night it doesn't work. I get the message that the operation timed out and to check my internet conection or something like that. I AM connected to the internet though. ???
Anyone got any ideas? Until I work this out I won't be able to tell anyone how this particular update turned out. :-)

nhmacusr 4/18/05, 2:18 PM EDT
Johan,

You can still go here and get the update:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.h tml

iKen 4/19/05, 7:11 AM EDT
Well, you guys convinced me to update last night. And it killed Safari. :(

nhmacusr 4/19/05, 7:56 AM EDT
Mac Fix It has some solutions for that. Specifically, update_prebindings seems to be fixing a ton of stuff.

Johan 4/19/05, 8:00 AM EDT
Thanks for the tip nhmacusr, though I am wondering after reading all the posts again; I'm glad I didn't have the time to update last night... Maybe I should just wait for Tiger to come out instead of opening up this can of worms! ;-)

iKen 4/19/05, 9:25 AM EDT
I just had to delete acid search, and it worked fine.

Robin 4/21/05, 10:03 AM EDT
Thanks so much Baal for the Acid Search suggestion! I took your advice, and Safari is back and better than ever. I love Mac people!

Jason D 4/21/05, 11:44 AM EDT
I upgraded to 10.3.9 and had problems with Safari, mainly Limewire and RealPlayer. I just reloaded the Security update 2005-002 and everything worked fine after that. Nothing to it. It was stressful up to that point though!

Jonahan 4/21/05, 1:48 PM EDT
Wow... I just installed 10.3.9 on my iBook and had the same Safari problems (just didn't load). I repaired permissions but that didn't help. Removing those SIMBL files did the trick though! (Now what the hell are those things trying to do???)

Also, those files were in my /~Library/Application Support and /~Library/Input Managers. You canjust do a search for SIMBL.

Yay, Safari is happy and so am I!

Jonahan 4/21/05, 1:56 PM EDT
I'm going to answer my own question ... just because I can.

SIMBL is apparently a "Smart InputManager Bundle Loader". Read more about it here.

Abhoc 4/24/05, 3:01 PM EDT
Java Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9 fixes the Safari problem. I have had no other problems on my 'old' B&W with a G4 CPU upgrade with 10.3.9.

Just rerun Software update to get Java Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9.

Computer 4/26/05, 12:18 PM EDT
Hey kid, I'm a computer. Stop all the downloading.

Help computer.

5/5/05, 8:28 PM EDT
I recently updated and have been having serious problems with hard drives shutting down and crashing the computer. I think it might be linked with the PCI controller card I installed to add more storage, but I've only found one coinciding article/posting. Anyone know anything about this??
