A Preview Review of Tiger |
|
Well, HTML Samurai and I just got Tiger and we decided to review it. It's still installing, mind you, but we didn't want to let that stop us. Everyone else seems to have a review up and, well, we can't go without one here at 2 Guys'.
So far the install is going smoothly and efficiently. While that installs, let us tell you about the rest of the OS, or at least what we think it will be like.
Dashboard seems to be pretty cool. It's much like Konfabulator, only different. A quick keystroke (or mouseclick, we suppose) and you have at least several widgets at your command. Apparently you can click on them and get information about things. We suspect that CPU usage is taxed somewhat by having a multitude of these open, so we're really hoping there's a way to disable it completely. Except for when we want access to them. Which is quite often.
We also really wish that the widgets would update in the background, plus that we could have them right on the desktop instead of having to activate them somehow. Unless you can do that already, in which case, kudos Apple!
Automator is the swiss army knife of, well, automating things. I recently picked up a book called "AppleScript - the missing manual", and now I totally don't need to read it! I will have been able to set up a script that randomly opens windows, clicks around them, and otherwise makes it look like we're doing work. We don't even need hold our eyelids open any longer!
Spotlight will have been great as well, especially for those with huge pr0n libraries scattered across their drives.
Smart folders help with pr0n also, as you can set up a folder for say "llamas" & "leiderhosen" and any files containing those words will (probably) be copied to your smart folder.
We won't even go there with iChat AV! Hehe...
er...
But yeah, Mail's new interface looks pretty slick, and we're NOT just going by the picture in the book, because otherwise we'd say stuff like in Mail you can "Click Slideshow to view the images attached to a message" or "Create a Smart Mailbox to automatically roganize email messages".
Safari RSS smells like cheese. (What did you think RSS stood for? Ricotta, Sharp and Swiss.) Safari has lots of other great features too.
Um...
Well for one you can click on text "links" and you are redirected to another "Web page". You really have to see it in action to appreciate it!
Well that's it for now, Tiger is about done installing. We hope you got a lot out of this, and really, there's no need to thank us. Enjoy Tiger! |

Dashboard widgets can't live on the desktop by themsleves with just Tiger. However, the third party guys are fast at work...

I actually got a PowerBook on April 29, and they gave me a free Tiger drop-in installer and a 30 day trial of iWork. So far, so good.

Jebus "hearts" tiger.
Seriously though... I have noticed major performance improvements in safari, and in just about everything else. (mac mini 1gb ram) Dashboard is hella fun, and the ladies love it! I kinda miss how mail looked, but I know that looks aren't everything. :) Spotlight is awesome! I7 pwnj00|2z mic|20$|_|(k win|)0z3!
Seriously though... as a recent switcher since march, who has dabbled in linux and *nix in general, and KNEW that macs were/are superior, yet hasn't used one since like OS 7 and hasent owend one since the original Macintosh.... I can NEVER go back. Tiger is the nail in the coffin. Windows is dead. Longhorn will be Microsoft's death blow. etc...
All I miss is the games. (exept D2 and Warcraft... thnx blizzard!)
/drunken mac loving rant
Buy, download (bad monkey!!!) or fake an .edu discount for Tiger NOW!!!
I scoff at the windows slaves/nubs now. It is so sweet.
p.s. did U 2 guys get a decent mic for your next pod cast?
p.p.s. ditch the bitch... she was distracting U hardcore.. she better be hot!

LOL ... yes we were distracted but I was also a little sick. Cool to hear your thoughts on tiger as a recent switcher.
nhmacusr - that Amnesty app looks cool. We'll have to use that to update our old 2 Guys widget to work in Dashboard.
any other thoughts as to features we could have? The old Konfabulator one was a basic RSS reader, with which Safari's RSS is somewhat pointless now.

Well, I got my copy today and did an upgrade install. Everything is working so far except for my M-Audio Firewire Solo. It seems that all of M-Audio's firewire drivers are broke. My oxygen 8 keyboard seems to be working okay. I gotta say that I love Grapher. Check out the real time 3-D graphs of say z=2cosx+3siny it is two frickin' cool!

Yah, I got my copy yesterday. I did a clean install on another drive - although everything from the old drive works - except the drivers for my trackball. El Tigre es mucho stable!

didn't OS9 have a grapher type thing... just not as spiffy and aquaish? I'm having a plethora of fun with this one. (Or is it, I'm having a plethora of fun in the time I'm saving with this boost to my math homework?)

Deep Thoughts |

It makes me mad when I go to all the trouble of having Marta cook up about a hundred drumsticks, then the guy at Marineland says "You can't throw that chicken to the dolphins. They eat fish.". Sure they eat fish, if that's all you give them. Man, wise up.
