I Need Some Help With My iBook |
|
I don't normally post personal problems online but this time I fear I must make an exception. You see, my beloved iBook has died and I need some suggestions on how I might breathe life back into it.
First, let me give you some insight into what I am running:
700 MHz G3 iBook
14" 640 MB RAM
30 GB HDD CDR/DVD
Tiger 10.4.0
Now, the problem:
Friday my iBook died and so I took it into the Apple Store in Richmond Virginia (the closest store to me). They reset the PMU, which was really annoying because I could have done this myself. Anyway, that got it up and running. Fast forward to last night. It died again. So, I reset the PMU again. And what did I get?
Nothing. Still dead.
It was at this point that I said something along the lines of "Oh dear, my how unfortunate this is" or something like that.
Anyway, here I am trying to get my iBook back up and running and so I thought I would ask you guys for some help. You could do one of the following things:
1. Suggest how I might go about fixing the PMU (if that is what is wrong with it)
2. Suggest where I might find a good deal on a logic board.
3. Sell me a logic board for a good price.
4. Donate money to the "iBook repair fund" (or you can just donate a computer, that works too. And hey, its tax deductable!)
But seriously, any help would be appreciated. And feel free to hit me up with questions at [email protected]

Disassemble your iBook. Ebay every part that you know to be good. Your laptop will serve a purpose helping others repair their old computers. Then take the money you make and apply it to a new iBook.

Are you sure you are reseting the PMU correctly? I hear tell it is a very complicated and delicate procedure... ;-)

Consider calling Apple even though it probably isn't under warrenty tell them your screen died, it was flickering and than all of a sudden you got nothing. More than likely they'll consider you for the logic board replacement program, I had to send my G3 back to them 5 times for the same problem. I know it sounds sleazy but this problem is more than likely their fault.

i aggree with speedyrev. if you are not willing to truct buying used parts from ebay, then i would part it out and use the money towards another. i have done both. i had a screen going bad in a blueberry clamshell. bought a dead ibook the same model took out the screen and parted out the rest which made me money and got a fixed screen. even was able to sell the bad screen even though auction details told what was wrong with it.

did you try to press "alt" to choose the boot-volume, or is your mac not starting at all?
It would be very helpful if you could describe the problem a bit more instead of just saying "it's dead". If it's really dead you probably can turn it in to a living dead (zombie). Go ask your local voodoo-priest for professional guidance. ;-)

Definitely sell it on Ebay and get a used iBook G4, which are fairly inexpensive. The Apple store currently has 12 inch 1 GHz models for 799.00 on their refurb page.
