 The Divine Option Key
Ever since the days of antiquity, when OS X was not yet handed down to us mere mortals by The Great Steve, you could hold down the Option key and then click and drag a file or folder and it would thusly be copied to that location.

This still works in OS X, but here's something I believe to be new (correct me if I'm wrong). Hold down Option and Apple, and drag a file or folder to a new location. An alias (or shortcut, for those new to the Mac Way) will be created instead of a copy of that item. Praise Avie!

"Hold down Option and Apple, and drag a file or folder to a new location. An alias (or shortcut, (...) will be created instead of a copy of that item."

This has been part of Mac OS for ages... Must coincide with the introduction of aliases in system 7 (?).

Not quite that old, MH, but it's been around since at least OS 8.5, and I think even as far back as 8.0.

Yeah, well, it's old news to all of you winners, but it's news to me. Thanks for the info!

you can also hold down the command key to *move* a file between deviced/volumes.

Come on, with a title like that there should have been about 10 keyboard shortcuts involving the Option key, with a theme tying them all together and explaining why the word 'option' made sense for them.

Jonahan 4/17/03, 10:41 AM EDT
Yeesh, sorry! I know most of the option-key commands, and this one was news to me. Since I've been using Macs since System 6, I figured if I didn't know it, some other people wouldn't either, and apparently I did help out at least 1 person, so that makes it worthwhile.

Your points are all well-taken, however. Keep in mind it's sometimes hard to write when your audience is such as diverse crowd as the Mac Web - some people know everything, some are newbies. We're still a pretty new site, and as such are still figuring out what people want to read as well as becoming better writers. Thank you kindly for your comments, and in the future you can be sure we'll give you more reason to read our articles!

WOW! That is an excellent tip. It is something I never thought of trying.

I really enjoy visiting your site. As a newbie to a Mac, I'll take what I can get, especially when it has built in comic relief.

Thanks for everything, even the tips that everyone else already knows!

I think it was introduced in 8.0, because it wasn't in 7.6, on my 6100/66, but it is in 8.1, on my Quadra 700. but, I didn't find out about it untill 8.6, reading on a web site, about all of the hints and easter eggs. www.macosxhints.com
