Friday Rumor Roundup |
|
This week brought us the Safari Public Beta 2. What, if anything, will Apple release next week? Nobody knows for sure, but here's a list of some common rumors going around the 'Net. Believe them...or not!
PowerPC 970 (G5) Chip - Supposedly these are in production.
PowerMac G5's - There are still no clues as to when the PowerMac G5 will come out, but there is some info about the look of it. MacWhispers suggests a radical change in the next PowerMac's design, including an aluminum front panel. Looprumors also thinks the PowerMac will be completely redesigned to house the new G5 motherboard.
Updated 15" PowerBook - MacWhispers talks about it here. Word on this is that it will happen SOON.
iBooks: Again, "Soon" is the key word. Apparently there will be minor speed-bumps of up to around 900Mhz, claims ThinkSecret. (And perhaps NEW iBooks with G4's in time for the CREATE conference?)
iPod - iPod2's rumored release is 'end of April'. It's said to have 10GB,15GB, and 30GB drives and will ship with 'iPod2 Docks'. Here's a rendering of it. Some sites are also speculating that it will include a docking station.
Apple Tablet - The scuttlebutt on this one is that, according to a Digitimes article, Quanta Computer has landed a contract from Apple to build 15" Tablet-like devices. That size is much different (and much larger!) than the one offered up by MacWhispers.
Lastly, there's the whole music arena. There's a lot going on here including Apple possibly buying Universal Music Group, an Apple Music Service, as well as an update to iTunes that hooks into the music service.
First off, about Apple buying Universal Music Group - Apple has denied making any sort of offer. Plus, while Apple does have many in-roads to the Music industry, this move just doesn't seem to make sense (to ME at least), as Apple is first and foremost a Computer company. This rumor may just be the result of Apple bigwigs meeting with record company executives while they're getting the Music Service off the ground, but who knows!?
Apple's Music Service is reportedly going to be launched on April 28th (Sources are AppleInsider and Mac Rumors).
LoopRumors suggests a possible update to iTunes4, but what seems more likely is a small update that activates some of the hidden features of iTunes so that it integrates with this Music Service.
However, MacOS Rumors (look for their April 2nd entry) thinks we may have to wait until the release of Panther for Apple new music service:
We may be waiting for Apple's music download service until the release of Panther, because it may not be directly tied to iTunes as previously thought -- but rather, part of a larger Apple direct-sales initiative implemented within the OS itself! This would not only allow Mac OS X users to buy and immediately download music from Apple, but it would also include software sales in the initial release and could later expand to movies/television, streaming content, and virtually any other form of commercial data!
Those are all the rumors I could find for this week, but let me know if I missed anything!
