What's In Store For Tomorrow? |
|
So it's 2004, the holidays are over, and we're about 20 pounds fatter. But it was worth it. Anyhow, one might expect us to get off the lethargic bandwagon and start cranking out some content. Being that it's a Monday after about two weeks of not-so-productiveness, that might pose a pretty big problem - except for the fact that Steve Jobs' keynote address at the MacWorld Expo is tomorrow!
That's right - tomorrow. If you were looking for the perfect excuse to not put in a full week's work for the first time in almost a month, this is it! Use those sick days, schedule that vacation time, take your boss hostage and demand that he/she allows your entire staff to break from 9:00-11:30 PST (or so) to witness the keynote speech - do whatever you have to do, because this should be a good one.
Ok, we really have no proof of any kind that it'll be a "good one", but pretty much every speech by Steve is entertaining and generally Apple releases SOMETHING cool. Rumors are abounding as always, and tons of sites are offering wrap-ups of what we can possibly expect - iPodHacks.com and ThinkSecret are just a couple. We won't get in-depth on all the rumors but here's a quickie rundown:
(Keep in mind, these are all uncomfirmed rumors)
Updates to Apple's iLife suite, Safari 1.2, FinalCut Express 2.0, G5 Xserves, revamped Cinema Displays, miniPods, and even an Apple set-top box.
The only bit of speculation that I'll do is say that I think the "set-top box" will be more of a MonsterPod than something that sits on your TV. Remember PAL? Plus you know Steve's penchant for having three models of each product - so you'd have miniPod, iPod, and SuperMegaGiganticHumongousPod! Just a shot in the dark, mind you.
But no matter what may come tomorrow, you have to be prepared. That's why Bill Palmer's article, "Ideal moments to take a bathroom break during Steve's keynote" may come in real handy! On top of what Bill has to say, most Apple Stores have a bathroom, and if you ask really nice and/or are wearing Apple apparel, they usually let you in there. If you're fast enough you might even be able to run in there during the "software demo inexplicably hangs and Steve passes it off with affable grace and then drinks some water" scene.
But heck, you may not even want to watch the Keynote tomorrow after all. Over at the Mac Observer, the eloquent Andy Ihnatko offers us a preview of not only tomorrows show, but a script of each and every keynote speech from now until the end of time (we all know Steve is immortal, right?). Andy's insight tells us that - get this - Steve will strut out on stage wearing jeans and some type of black "turtleneck" thing. I know, I'd have to see it to believe it as well.
Lastly, maybe we're all thinking way too conservative with our rumor mongering and blatant guessing. We know the G5 is a big honking processor, and about as hot as the Crack of Doom to boot, but Apple will surely find a way to stuff it into a PowerBook, right? Well to answer that question we need to look at the casing - Apple has gone through Titanium, is now using Aluminium, but what about Plutonium? I don't even know what Plutonium is, but aside from a little radiation, it sure sounds cool!
And while we're at it, howsabout a "Switch" computer, targeted at Windows users, that has a bland-biege case and a custom version of OS X that forces reboots several times a day just to make the Switcher feel at home? Or the iPhoto Porn Store: one-click porn downloading will revolutionize the industry! And we can't forget the iPod that actually jacks into a Matrix-like slot on your body, powering itself off your electrochemical impulses - no more dead batteries!
Pfff...who needs an Apple-branded tablet or set-top box when you've got an imagination?
Happy Keynote Eve everyone!

OK WTF does that have to do with this article? Why would we link to it? Why not throw in some stuff about rutabagas, or midgets marching forward to war wielding a trout, a garbage can lid for a shield, and watermelons for boots!? That would make just as much sense ;)

Humm... odd that they only show programs that was written for a 32bit processor instead of a 64bit processor. Why could they only test it with those programs? ... oh yes because Alienwhore cannot make a gaming machine with a 64bit processor ... because no games are written to run nativity on a 64bit processor .... idiot

Hey It's macworlds benchmarks..
Humm...thats funny....What's this machine i'm using right now...Ohh is it an Athlon 64 on 64bit linux...?
Ok...Real world...I'll load my A64 with pro tools...But I have no use for it...What possibly makes you think pro tools would be any better an a G4/5?
Where's the information...Or theese "real world" results...
What does 64 bit have to do with that link anyways...
Where's the 64 bit apps?
If A chip runs slow in 32 bit, With no emulation...then ...what makes you think it will clean up in 64 bit?
Read this...

rlhamon: you run nativity scenes on your computer?...hum .....idiot

Wow you just amaze me with you Lack of Knowledge ...
OK I will speak slowly for you ...
AMD 64bit processor is a 32bit processor doubled which means that it can float between 32 and 64 and run the program natively.... Is that a bad thing no actually I like that concept for a home user pc .... but It's still not a true 64bit processor so on 32bit programs it would have a higher benchmark but on a 64bit program the G5 beat the pants off of the AMD machine.
What does that mean I will spell it out for you ...
32bit Programs will not run as fast on a G5 as it would a 32bit Processor
a 64 bit program the G5 is the fastest processor around.
Humm ... Yea your still an idiot

Ahahah...you're funny
obviously you don't know what you're talking about...Because thats the same way a G5 works....

Wow! Your not even fun to argue with.
Next Time you want to troll around here and make comments please know what your talking about and have a better knowledge of hardware and software and make valid points instead of reading marketing articles and think that you know what your talking about.
I'm finish with you ... Your a waste of bandwidth ... take a class or two in computers or something before your argue with professionals about something you have no idea about.
|
Matt |

Sure you're finished...because you just got nailed acting like you know what you're talking about....You're talking about a Frontside Bus...not a CPU...
humm...I wonder why this whole bit thing goes in double integers....8 Bit,16 bit,32 bit,uhhh...
I love it when people take personal stabs because they Don't know what they are talking about...
Taken From The G5 white Paper
"""Native Compatibility with 32-Bit Application Code
On other platforms, switching to a 64-bit computer requires migrating to a 64-bit operating system (and purchasing 64-bit applications) or running a 32-bit operating system in a slow emulation mode. With the PowerPC G5, the transition to 64-bit performance is seamless: Current 32-bit code—such as existing Mac OS X and Classic applications—runs natively at processor speed, with no interruptions to your workflow
and no additional investment in software.
Unlike competing instruction sets, the PowerPC architecture was designed from the
beginning to run both 32-bit and 64-bit application code. This enables the G5 processor
to run Mac OS X natively for an immediate performance boost. In addition, as
applications are optimized and as Mac OS X is further enhanced for the PowerPC G5,
performance gains will be even greater."""
