The 10.2.8 Update Ain't So Bad
Okay, so Apple posts a Software Update to 10.2.8 yesterday morning and then pulls it later that same evening. That's ok, we can deal. After all, the 2GAMAAW crew was unaffected by the Ethernet issue and other problems that plagued the OS X update. The funny thing is, Apple's 'Knowledge Archive' documents (here and here) that referred to the OS X 10.2.8 update have disappeared in Hoffa-like fashion. You'd have thunk Apple would at least let people know what's up. Well, whether it's a cover-up of JFK proportions, we may never know; however, before people start gathering their pitchforks and nooses and heading over to One Infinite Loop, calling for Avie Tevanian's head, let's calm down and think about things first.

Yes, Apple should do a better job of quality assurance. Software updates usually go through Apple employees first, then developers, and then are released to the public, but maybe Apple should offer a "test release" to bold and adventurous early adopters. These are the ones who rush to install any release from Apple anyway and a lot of bugs could be squished (or is it squashed?) by doing this.

Secondly, it could be worse. It's been a long time since Apple had an update that was this danged exciting, and heck, at least it's not really that damaging (unlike the iTunes 2.0 installer debacle). And before anyone starts comparing Apple to Microsoft (buggy software, bad rollout of software, overweight and sweaty CEO - er no wait, scratch that last one), let's just see what else has been going on with Microsoft recently:
• M$ is closing MSN chat roomsin 28 countries in an effort to "ward off pedophiles and junk e-mailers". It sounds well and good, but all they're really doing is making people pay for the service.

• A federal judge has ordered Microsoft to pay nearly $1 million in legal fees to the state of Massachusetts.

• The European Union is closing in on a decision regarding M$'s anti-competitive practices and is about to administer a bitch-slap.

• We can't forget all the virus critters that have been running around. The most recent news on this front is that the State Department was hit last night. The system affected was the one that checks visa applicants for terrorist or criminal history - leaving the Government briefly unable to issue visas.
Now, one little OS X update that kills the Ethernet connection on a few computers doesn't sound so bad, does it? The only thing is, what will Apple call the update for 10.2.8? 10.2.9 would be dangerously close to running out of numbers, and 10.2.8.1 just seems a little decimal crazy (or maybe it's someone's IP?).

Just like a security update a while back, they will call it 10.2.8 version 2, as you may notice most updates have a version 1.0 next to them.

i downloaded the 10.2.8 update last night and really the only thing that it caused an gliched was to my track pad. i set up my ibook so when i to hook up a mouse to my ibook the track pad would not work... now the track pad is allways on. besides that the system runs better really.

No problems on a G4 Sawtooth.... Ethernet on DSL works fine.

At least, you should visit MacFixit(www.macfixit.com), then reconsider about this issue.

Just for grins, open up a terminal window and type this command:

sysctl hw.cpufrequency

It seems that in some cases the 10.2.8 upgrade resets the cpu frequency. My 867 MHz Powerbook was only running at 667 MHz after the upgrade.

You have to reset the PMU to reset the frequency. Read about how to do that here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq9
