 End-of-week News Wrapup. With Cheese.
Well it's Friday, and the end of another work week, school week, or well, just another week if you're an unemployed vagbond. But it's been an interesting week in the wild and wooly world of Apple, and since we at 2GAMAAW haven't had as much time as we'd like to bring you new and original content, we'll try to slap together an overview of some of the weeks major events.

First off, let's look at everyone's favorite company: Microsoft. Ok, I mistyped - I meant to say Paul Thurrott's favorite company. According to an ITnews article (that we came across thanks to MacSlash) Mr. Thurrot, a died-in-the-wool Microsoft backer and apologist, writes that Microsoft may be in danger of losing the Windows trademark. Apparently, the Redmond behemoth is in court as we ... er ... speak ... and it will soon be decided whether the term "windows" is a generic computing term. If so, MS may have to rename it's flagship product. (May we suggest something along the lines of "Microsoft Sucks®"?)

'Course that's not all for Microsoft this week. There's also the security issue they knew about for over 6 months and did nothing about, the many MyDoom virus variants, and the fact that someone leaked portions of source code for Windows that, according to a CNN article, "could allow hackers to exploit the operating system and attack machines running some versions of Windows".

Fun stuff. Makes you glad to be a Mac user, right!? (If you're not a Mac user at this point, you really should be. Come on, drink the kool aid! It tastes great AND it's less filling!)

Which brings me to my next point. Mac users have long had an inferiority ocmplex when it comes to raw processor speed - but no more! A while back we pointed out some reasons the G5 really was that fast, but now we have some more. According to The Register, the PowerPC 970FX has "won the Microprocessor Report Analysts' Choice Award for Best Desktop Processor". The PowerPC 970FX is actually a newer 90 nanometer version of the G5 that's not even being used in Macs yet. Using a smaller die (and no, we don't know how many sided die we're talking about here, but we're absolutely sure our D&D skills will pay off at some point) IBM should be able to get the chip to speeds in excess of 3 Ghz! According to Peter Glaskowsky (Microprocessor Report Analysts' editor-in-chief), "At 3GHz, the 970FX should outrun the chips we expect from AMD and Intel in the same time frame".

Well somebody slap me with Liver McNuggets® and punch a nun! (Don't actually go out and punch a nun - geez! It's just a figure of speech.)

Anyhow, on top of that feel-good news, does anyone else think that the Pepsi/iTunes cross promotion is one of the best things to ever happen to Apple? There are commercials all over TV and radio and Apple just can't buy better press. People are crawling all over each other to find "specially marked bottles" of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, and in some cases Mountain Dew.

Even though you can buy any song from the iTunes Music Store for 99˘, there's just something addicting about buying a bottle of pop and seeing if you've won. It's like pull-tabs or instant-win lottery tickets, but with the added bonus of getting a song you can listen to over and over again, as well as having something tangible to toss down the 'ole gullet.

While we have no word on if the promotion is drawing new customers to the iTunes Music Store (and actually getting Apple repeat business from those people), those stats will probably be out soon.

In other news, Jonathan Ivie has been voted Britain's no. 1 cultural figure, beating out such high-profile people as J.K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter books) and actors Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan), Catherine Zeta-Jones and Orlando Bloom.

Last but not least, thanks to an email from effervescent 2GAMAAW reader, SquirrelMaster, we know of another sincere attempt at flattery: It seems the graphics department at Bowling Green State University are big Apple fans, as the cover of the school's 2004 summer class schedule looks decidedly like certain ads for a certain digital music player made by a certain computer company that's talked a lot about on a certain Web site. But we can't be certain at this point.

The only difference from Apple's iPod ads is that the guy in the bottom-left panel appears to be holding a severed human head, while the people in the other panels are ritualistically dancing around him, sans-iPod mind you. Is this just a harmless schedule cover, or proof of the first openly cannibalistic school?

You decide.

Oh yeah, and happy Friday the 13th and Valentines Day! Here's hoping that Valentines Day is the stronger of the two forces, or at the very least that they cancel each other out.

Have a great weekend!

I've seen a lot of severed human heads in my day, (don't ask) and that is, with out a doubt, a severed human head. Makes me want to go to BGSU despite the 67% STD rate.

67%!!!! dude, sorry but severed heads or no. 67% i think would instill a severe case of onenitestandaphobia! maybe even a chronic case of gettinglaidatallaphobia!

sweetjimmyhugs 2/13/04, 8:04 PM EDT
67% eh? I like my odds...

I think MS should change Windows to:

Microsoft AARRRRHHHG$#@#$@^^&!!!!!

okcalla 2/14/04, 12:29 AM EDT
nah microsoft will win the only people they cant seem to beat are 17 yr olds and apple. the rest (ie the US goverment) are just bugs waiiting to be squashed!

Jedbeck 2/14/04, 9:33 AM EDT
Way to go for my Alma Mater, ripping of Apple so blatantly. It is a true reality game, if you can make it out in 5 years without contracting something you are skillful, a gold card member in the penicillin prescription club, lucky, or not lucky. (if you know what i mean.) I will not say where I fell into. :)
